Viva & Aviv The River

What we say: 3.5 stars

Set right on the Chao Phraya River in the otherwise sleepy River City shopping complex, this playful and popular spot is a splurge for the senses (and your wallet).

Viva & Aviv pulls off a mix of relaxed and romantic riverside dining, Sunday afternoon DJ beats, fruity and rum-heavy cocktails, Spanish chorizo sandwiches and pirate-inspired decor.

While not cheap at 250 baht, Viva & Aviv's signature cocktails steal the show on any occasion -- try a “Young Guns & Old Grenades” with lychee, fresh pomegranate and young ginger or a “Man Goes Nuts” with ripe mango, citrus and saffron syrup.

If you don't lose it and jump into the river after that last one, a creative kitchen serves snacks like duck with mango pickles and fig paste and croquet balls with yoghurt dipping sauce (180 baht) and meals that include an Italian spin on Thailand’s traditional tom kha gai (225 baht). More standard but still very tasty options include sandwiches, pizza and pastas.

The best time to come is from 16:00 to 20:00 during their happy hour when you can enjoy the cocktail of the week (199 baht), wine by the glass (199 baht) or draught beer (99 baht) and catch a pink sunset over the water.
