Wong's Place is a dive. It's small, its interior could only be described as eclectic-lazy and half of the time you have to get your own beer out of the coolers and open it before paying.

But it's one of the best dive bars in all of Southeast Asia. Is some of Wong's legend hype? Definitely, but depending on the randomness of the people that show up, it can be one of the best nights in Bangkok.

Wong's was opened by two brothers during the final years of the Vietnam War, and while one of the Wongs has passed on, the other maintains the tradition of cheap beer, late nights, and loud, awesome 70s and 80s rock on the sound system.

Wong's Place opens at its owner's whims, but almost never opens before 23:00, and stays open way past the official closing time of 2:00 — your correspondent has left several times, defeated, as the sun rose.

Rumour has it that the second Wong brother was a Thai senator's right hand man before his brother died and he quit to run the bar, and therefore enjoys an exemption from the normal closing time (as well as the indoor smoking ban, it seems).

If you like a late night, definitely check out Wong's before sunrise. Beer is cheap, no food served.
