Shades of Retro

Unusual beats and fixed gear bikes

What we say: 4 stars

This fresh and funky spot is tucked away on tiny Soi Tararom 2 in the trendy Thong Lo part of town.

It's between Thong Lo Sois 16 and 18 -- turn at the corner at Bottom's Up Bar if coming down Soi 18. At first it's tough to see how anyone found the bar in the first place, but it becomes obvious on DJ nights: beats blast loudly outside and Bangkok's cool, hipster set who like to spread the word about their favourite haunts mill about with cocktails in hand.

Inside, the cosy but lively bar boasts upstairs and downstairs terraces, but this is a sociable spot so don't expect to grab a couch with a date and have a relatively private night out. One of the first things you'll notice are the piles of odd stuff, some of it "retro", that's apparently for sale -- old sunglasses, maracas, fixed gear bikes, T-shirts, LPs, vespas, banjos and an organ are all found among the clutter.

Original cocktails like passionfruit julep, watermelon mojito and sweet basil sour are tasty but heavy on the ice, and pricey at 220 baht. A large bottle of Thai beer will set you back 140 baht, also expensive in a bar that doesn't feel high-end. The prices are warranted not by the ambience but by the scene itself, which features creative DJs (not easy to find in Bangkok) churning out unusual mixes such as Punjabi versions of classic rock hits. The bar also offers popcorn snacks to all its patrons and sells Jamon Serrano Spanish ham; well, why not?

While not the spot for backpackers seeking cheap suds, Shades of Retro is worth a peek for anyone looking to see what the funkier of Bangkok's twenty-somethings are up to.
