Nagarina Restaurant & Gaia Bar

Sunset cruises and live music

What we say: 3.5 stars

This floating restaurant-by-day-bar-by-night combo is an interesting option for a decent Thai meal or a late-night beverage.

Nagarina Restaurant serves as the launching pad and kitchen for The Nagarina, a boat that hosts daily sunset cruises down the Mekong. The menu is typical of a quality midrange Thai restaurant, with favourites such as grilled fish, hotpot soups and rich curries. Prices are generally a little high, but the food justifies it. If you come later in the evening, the kitchen will be shuttered and Gaia Bar instead open for business. This cosy spot very much has the feel of being on a boat, where everything looks normal, just a bit close together. Prices are reasonable, and there is often live music. Be forewarned: the musicians playing are usually amateurs or even volunteers from the gathered listeners, so while you might get the chance to play a few tunes if you feel so inclined, you may also end up listening to a couple of hours of rather uninspiring renditions of Beatles songs. Overall though, the bar is an excellent option for a night out.
