There are several markets around town, and a bit of exploration will yield rewarding discoveries.

The best of the bunch, however, is the Morning Market on Kha Luang road, not far from the river. Here you will find not only the fresh ingredients and produce that morning markets usually specialize in, but also some excellent breakfast foods and drinks to satisfy your early morning hunger.

As the day progresses, the attention shifts up the road to the afternoon market, which unfortunately specialises primarily in the fresh produce that few travellers have use for. However, it is always fascinating to have a look around at what is in season, and there are still a many options in terms of ready-made food that can be taken back to any guesthouse or hotel with some kitchenware.

As dinner hour approaches, the afternoon market shuts up shop and the stalls out on Pha Kong Rd north of Anantaworarittidet Road light their burners. Here, you’ll find all your Thai street food favourites, along with some options you’ve probably never tried.

For the adventurous: there is also a small restaurant just past all the action on the western side of the street that serves Northern style food; if you don’t speak Thai, you may have trouble, but those who do or those that are willing to just go and hope for the best can get a taste of the local specialties.
