A well sized portion sets you back 35 baht with your choice of chicken, pork meatballs, or beef meatballs, along with all the necessary khao soi fixings. Adjacent to the shop a small stand sells grilled pork satay, a tasty companion to the main attraction.

The staff running the shop don't speak English and can appear a bit intimidated when they see a foreigner coming, but the menu is simple so ordering is not difficult. (Tip: if you want to play it safe, say "gai" for chicken, it's easy to pronounce and totally delicious.) As khao soi is typically a lunch food, Seng Pian is not open evenings, so don't put it off too late.

Connoisseurs may notice a difference in the flavour and consistency of this khao soi, as it is made in the traditional Northern style, using less coconut milk than the versions made to suit the tastes of foreigners.

Simply put, a visit to Khao Soi Seng Pian is a must for any Thai food lover travelling through Phayao. Even if you're only passing through town, set aside 30 minutes to stop and have lunch; you won't be disappointed.
