Ko Pha Ngan is so big, we’ve split it up into areas, select one of the below for detailed accommodation and food listings in that area. Sights and general overviews for Ko Pha Ngan as a whole can be found via the icons above. Don’t know where to start? Read an overview of Ko Pha Ngan’s different areas.
Ko Pha Ngan’s funky and boldly named Better Than Sex lounge and restaurant is located a bit away from the beach on Thong Nai Pan Noi, though it has a vibe worthy of a beachfront location. It’s worth stopping by, regardless of the lack of sand and waves.
Both travellers to Thong Nai Pan and also the Ko Pha Ngan expat community stop by to tuck into their dishes, which are certainly inventive, combining Thai, Burmese and other Asian concepts with Western flavours. Dishes include Vietnamese Twist, which consists of tortilla rolls with fresh vegetables, sweet basil and Vietnamese sausage (160 baht), and quesadillas stuffed with mango, cheese and coriander, with mango salsa on the side. The quesadillas were golden and buttery, with perfectly-melted cheese, while the mango salsa complimented the flavours perfectly.
Known for their pizza, Better Than Sex also serves up a menu of 19 different toppings, from Fruitti Di Mar, with pesto mozzarella, seafood and spinach (320 baht), to Thai-flavoured Pizza Kai Krapao, with Italian pesto, Thai basil with minced chicken and chillies (295 baht). Curries, fish fillets, sirloin steaks, pastas and Thai favourites make up the rest of the menu.
The drink menu is extensive, with 37 cocktails, priced from 170 to 200 baht. Thai beers are available at 100 baht or less per bottle. Get generous servings of wine by the glass for 150 baht.
The restaurant itself is quite large, with a spacious outdoor patio area. Booth seating is the patio’s main feature, made out of white-panelled wood, with thick cushions on top, and traditional Thai pillows for more comfort. A long bench scattered with large, vibrant-coloured pillows faces the restaurant’s interior.
Inside is not a far departure from outside: the bright pillow theme continues, but more Western table-and-chair sets are available. Along the front wall is a raised wooden platform, full of earth-toned beanbag chairs, while interesting pieces of art and decor hang from the high ceiling, such as an oversized wooden wind chime and disco balls.
With the exception of plastic coverings for monsoon, it doesn’t appear that the windows in this place ever close, giving it a light, airy feel.
Better Than Sex — you can decide whether the name is true for yourself or not, ahem — is a highly recommended refueling spot, if beachfront dining isn’t super important to you. Do bring cash, as they don’t take plastic.
