Flip Flop Pharmacy is a fun bar with a catchy name and bright orange front is a great place to chill out on Ko Pha Ngan’s Thong Nai Pan Yai beach.
The set-up is pretty typical of an island bar, though the hanging wooden chair swings dispersed throughout the bar are a unique touch. Flip Flop Pharmacy made a name for itself when it opened in 2005 on Thong Nai Pan Noi, but a few years ago moved to the centre of Thong Nai Pan Yai.
Its trademark giant “flip flops” bearing the bar’s name hang from the ceiling, just near a mountain of spirits. The teak wood bar is surrounded by wooden stools, or relax on the adjacent wooden seating areas with pillows for added comfort.
What people love about Flip Flop is that it’s one of the few places where it’s possible to get a draft beer on the beachfront, with Singha and Tiger draft going for 120 baht for a pint. They also have favourites like San Miguel Light (80 baht), Corona Extra (150 baht), and Beer Lao (80 baht), and even Weston’s cider for 150 baht targetting the Brits. A huge selection of “prescription” cocktails range in price from 160 to 200 baht.
They once did hamburgers so good that people would come for them from all over the island, but sadly they are no longer on the menu. Now, it’s mainly pizza, which, to be fair, they do pretty well.
The music seems to be on random, but for the most part, has a funky beach bar vibe – Bob Marley from time to time, but usually something different without being too far from his vibe.
A pool table is provided free of charge for patrons, though be very careful of your drink, as there are heavy fines for spillage — up to 2,000 baht!
Their Mellow Monday party starts at 20:00 and continues until whenever, and features international bartenders and fun music. The owners, Bert and Roman, are friendly and helpful.
While you should definitely come here for a drink, be warned: don’t stay at a resort that’s overly close to Flip Flop, unless you can handle the night-time noise!
