Salad Hut

What we say: 3.5 stars

How can you not love Haad Salad’s laidback Salad Hut, where the staff wear shirts saying “same shit, different day”? This funky place has a relaxed atmosphere that provides a great place to eat, then chill out, and then eat again, if you’re into that kind of thing.

The food is among the best on Haad Salad, if slightly pricey. Patrons may choose from floor seating on reclining cushions and Western-style tables and chairs.

Get there early for happy hour, from 17:30 till 18:30, where you can get a small Singha for 50 baht (normally 60 baht) and a glass of wine for 100 baht (normally 130 baht). If it’s not a cloudy day, you should be able to catch a great view of one of Haad Salad’s famous sunsets around this time as well.

This is a great place to go for dinner with a big group, as it has something for every taste — their Western food is as good as their Thai. Recommended are the red curry with chicken, and the pizza (thick crust and thick layer of cheese, decent size). Their plates range in price from 50 to 490 baht.

If you get there for breakfast, you’re in for a treat: the full English is as close to the real thing as you’ll find in Thailand, and the lattes are made with real espresso.

Bonuses include a pool table (20 baht per game), three computers with internet access (1 baht per minute), a large book shelf full of books (though mostly German or Swedish), and a hammock hanging in a wooden sala, perfect for reading. There is a pool beside the restaurant, but unfortunately it’s only for patrons of Salad Hut’s adjoining bungalows.

During high season (December to April), reservations are recommended as this place fills up fast at dinner time. To get here from Thong Sala, head along the beach road until you see a sign on the left that says “Salad Hut”. You’ll go down a very steep hill, just after which is a small parking lot, and the entrance to Salad Hut will be on your left.
