Rock star for under $25...
We’ve all done it, dragged a skuzzy backpack through some pretty skanky hostels, got so used to washing with a bucket of cold water that a dip in a highly chlorinated pool makes us feel unusually clean, trading conditioner for dreadlocks and razors for a patchy beard, because when you’re on the road anything goes … right?
So why when you were packing said backpack did you think to pack a party dress or the sort of shirt that might just get you passed a short sighted bouncer in a city club? We’ve done that too! And for all you smug savvy travellers that just stuffed a clean pair of knickers and two T-shirts in to a bum bag face it, you’re in Hoi An! You didn’t think you’d leave here without a $60 suit or cocktail dress, did you? Really? So here’s a guide to A-List opportunities to holiday like a rock star in Hoi An — all for under $25!
Nam Hai rockstars
The Nam Hai plays host to just about every celebrity, politician and dignitary to step foot in Vietnam and they stepped up their game in 2012. Their decadent lounge bar scored a revamp and they’re trialling an open house club night with international DJ’s, hugely discounted cocktails and staff working the room with trays of free tapas. For 2013 these are set to be a monthly affair with a few extra weekend sets thrown in for good measure. Decadency with a capital D along with dress code — of course. Read up here for how to get decked out in Hoi An.
Bohemian beach days at Banyan
For a boho An Bang beach vibe Banyan Bar delivers with an extra serving of bling. Rub shoulders with the cool set, lie back in the sun sipping cocktails without so much as dipping your toes in to the sand, strike a pose like Cameron Diaz on a paddleboard (extreme caution advised for first timers – falling off is oh not so cool) or parade around the petanque course. At weekends the Banyan boys host the coolest beach parties in town along with surf, football and stone skimming competitions with the odd live band and DJ ensemble. They also do free flow San Miguel all day till closing for just over $10 a head.
Bang balls with the best
Sinking a birdie on an 18 hole round of an international golf course is still a little out of the league of a lowly budget traveller but everyday between the hours of 16.00 to 18.00 for under $10 you can sink 100 balls and a pitcher of beer on the driving range at Montgomerie Links.
Pool posing at Sunrise
You know the story “we gate crashed the Inter Con” … well with the five star Sunrise Resort on Cua Dai Beach they actually welcome non-residents in search of swanning around in their over-sized sunglasses and slinky beach wear. For the price of a pool snack or happy hour cocktail you are welcome to frolic in the infinity whirlpool or kick back with the latest Russian Cosmopolitan from their extensive library on a pool lounger — both are ideal vantage points for checking out the movers and shakers on their all expenses vacation. Our top tip is to stay a little longer and pig out on a burger from Sensations restaurant as the sun sets – just over $10 and big enough to feed two and then some.
Free Flow Fizz at Victoria
Brunch darling? Why not! Every Sunday Victoria Resort on Cua Dai beach hosts a mouth watering melee of oysters, fresh seafood, cheese, a carnal carvery, patisserie, and a never ending supply of sparkly stuff kicking off at the respectable hour of 11.00 till 15.00 with a price tag of about $25. For this princely sum you’re even welcomed with open arms to sleep it off by the pool, wrapped in a delicious bear hug of a man-sized towel, after indulging in a wonderful hot shower (before entering the pool … you know the rules).
