Learn To Dive Thailand/Cambodia In September

Hi

I'm trying to decide where to learn to dive, in either Thailand or Cambodia. I'll be there in the wet season unfortunately (6 to 12 September). Does anyone have any suggestions, taking into account the season?

In Thailand I've been looking at Koh Tao, Ko Pha Ngan and Krabi (and surrounding beaches, including Ao Phang Nga and Hat Phra Nang / Railay). I've been told that Khao Lak, Ko Mak and Ko Ngai are beautiful too.

I'm having trouble working out where I can get PADI certified and where is the best for the season.

Cambodia is an alternative option.

Thanks.

Hello all,

I was planning to go diving in Ko Tao but I recently read a post where someone described it as 'not fantastic' which made me very sad (I would kill to see a whale shark!). I know this is a subjective question, but where do you believe the most exceptional place to dive in these four countries is? I have done my open water and about five or six fairly normal/plain dives in Europe (bar one where I got to see lots of big grouper).

I will be in SE Asia between August and ... maybe January/February? and I am already open water licensed with PADI, and advanced open water with NAUI.

I am just wondering what are must dive sites. I am starting my trip in July in China, heading south to Vietnam and definitely going to Phu Quoc, then on to Sihanoukville in Cambodia. After that I just want to get to as many other sites I can get to before I run out of money (while still seeing the touristy and scenic places along the way).

I was thinking about some of the following places (though nothing is planned, and everything is subject to change): Koh Tao, Similan Islands, Koh Samui, Palau, Bali, Gili Islands, Puerto Princesa, Wakatobi, Lembeh Strait, Ampat Raja

Hey y'all!

A friend and I will be traveling throughout SE Asia from October 2011-January 2012, during which time we plan to get PADI certified. We are planning to do the certification in either Indonesia or Malaysia, so I am looking for input on which one is better and why? Has anyone done a great program in either of these countries that they would recommend? What about cost comparison?

Thanks in advance for all of your input!

Wild Asia is on the lookout for an eco-minded dive operator with an entrepreneurial passion to spearhead a new initiative on a small island off Tioman (east coast of Malaysia). We are envisaging the creation of a dive operation that will be modelled around a social enterprise - a business that not only provides conventional dive services to guests but also to extend our conservation efforts to the wider reef and island resources. The social enterprise will be developed in partnership with an island resort owner. If this strikes your interest then drop us an e mail and provide us with your credentials and business experience. Please email us at info@wildasia.org with the subject title - Batu-Batu Reef & Island Dive Center (BRISC)

Late last year a new artificial reef was created on Koh Tao.

A liveaboard vessel was decommisioned and made safe for the environment and then sunk just off the south of Koh Tao.

A local film company filmed the sinking and even had camera on board. I think this film is great and wanted to share it !

And then the debate starts once again....

Are these magnificent animals grey reefs or are they bulls.....check out the images and information and decide for yourself.....

Diving In January?

Hi,

Just after some advice really. I am going to be travelling to Sydney in January and would like to stop off in the far east for maybe a week or more and seen as I am now certfied I thought it would be a good chance to dive somewhere new aside from the barrier reef. I was looking at Singapore and would love to see singapore anyway however it seems to be not their diving season from what I have googled. I also considered Thailand however I don't feel comfortable travelling through Thai on my own thats why Sing was appealing because it is more modernised. Any suggestions on areas where it is not their monsoon period I have no clue I would be looking to do an advanced course for my 30m ticket. Thanks in advance, Liz.

Hi,
My boyfriend and i are going to Borneo in October and just discovered how amazing the diving is there. We are both novice divers and are considering doing our open water.
Does anyone know much about scuba junkie? We were thinking about staying at their Mabul beach resort and doing the course?
Anyone done this it seems pretty pricey for our backpackers budget, but a once in a life time experience.
Also would love to get to Sipidian but that is REALLY expensive. Is it really that fantastic compared to the sorrounding islands.

Sorry for the load of questions hope someone can help.

Thanks

Hi there,

Can I get some experience from people who have dived in Vietnam - Nha Trang before?

I saw some pictures and they look pretty nice but asked a friend who came back from there, she commented that there's nothing much to see. Just the very usual marine life. No sharks, rays or turtles... To me, its fine, since I am just there to do my courses but it would be a bonus if the visibility is good and marine life is abundant.

Basically I'm just looking for a place that teaches OW & AOW at a low price (like Ko Tao). So I've emailed several dive schools in Vietnam and it seems the prices are pretty competitive to Ko Tao! I'm surprised... Here are some rates I've been given;

Rainbow Divers
PADI AOW & OW - US$350 ...

Hello all!
Ive never dived before, and since my time in SE Asia is limited to two months, shall I spend three days getting my PADI certificate or is it not worth the time? Money isnt a major issue as the diving is so cheap, but how much difference is there in experience between diving and snorkelling?

Thanks everyone!

Koh Tao To Dive In October? Where Else?

Hi
I posted on here a while ago, planning a trip in August and September, including some time on Koh Tao to learn to dive at the start of the trip. Due to work uncertainties and me 'faffing' about, I've been researching and planning, and buying things fo rhte trip, but haven't booked anything. So now the plan is to go in October and November, putting me on Koh Tao in the first 2 weeks of October.

Basically, is this a reasonable time to go for a diving course on Koh Tao, as the info on this site seems to show a fair bit of rain in October.

Obviously I'm going to be wet anyway! But are there storms or anything else?

Hi,

We've just qualified as SCUBA divers from Mermaids (excellent) in Pattaya and are heading down towards Malaysia. We plan to dive the Perhentians in Malay, therefore we'd quite like to dive the other side of the peninsula. However, it seems like the Similan/Surins etc are all off limits at this time.

Is there anywhere good for newly-qualified divers to go on the West coaast of the peninsula in July/August? Nothing too technical or 30m deep, just some slightly different scenery/life maybe and good fun. Thanks for any help,

Oli + Ema

PS we go to India next if anyone knows anything about there...
