Kawthoung / Victoria Point

Hi

3 questions if I may about Kawthoung / Victoria Point as thinking about a weeks stay rather than a simple visa run

1. How long is the visa on entry valid?
2. Assuming it is valid for more than one day are there any cheap guest houses/hotels that anyone would recommend?
3. Are there places outside of Kawthoung / Victoria Point that are accessible/interesting and and OK to visit with visa obtained on entry (either for day trips or overnight)

Thanks

I am planning to spend 2 weeks in Burma next March, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to see Yangon, Mandalay Bay, Bagan and Inle Lake, considering that I will not fly at all inside the country. I intend to take a train from Yangon to Mandalay, then a boat to Bagan and either a bus or a train from Bagan back to Yangon.

I am not at all sure about how to get to Inle Lake. From what I understand, the road from Mandalay to Inle is horrible.

My other limitation is that I need to travel during the day. I do not want to take either an overnight boat or a bus. I am not opposed to taking an overnight train.

Is it possible to travel by land inside Burma and see everything I want to see in 2 weeks? Please help me and, if my ...

ill be entering burma this november and will have my unlocked global phone with me as i plan on using prepaid sims in thailand and cambodia. is it dangerous for me to take this to burma? Is this something they check for and would they keep it if they found it?

Im wondering mainly because it will be with me and its not like I can use it in Thailand and then stash in somewhere before Burma... so not sure what I should do.

Hello fellow travelers,

My boyfriend and I will be in SE Asia for several months this fall and making a trip to Burma around Oct. 4/5/6 for about 25 days. At this point we are planning on leaving things largely unplanned because we're not entirely sure about what will shake out in the preceding months. I am getting the sense that this is quite fine, if not a good idea in Burma. However, there are some comments about getting a few rooms booked and or bus/boats booked in advance just for ease.

We'll fly into Yangoon and then hope to work it out from there.
My question is, how easy is it to just show up and wing it if we want to get rooms in Mandalay and Yangoon, a bus from Yangoon to Mandalay (maybe not direct) and then perhaps a ...

Hello, I'm going to Burma in 11 days from Bangkok. I already payed the visa on arrival, I chose the option 1 that it takes 2 weeks to the visa get ready. So I just saw "the 2 weeks" after I payed, anyone knows what can i do to fix that mistake? The option 2 Express is more 20 usd, is it possible pay the difference or I just have to buy another visa, now Express.
Thanks in advance.

I spent the month of May in Burma travelling the route Yangon-Mawlamyine-Bago-Mandalay-Pyin U Lwin-Kyauk Me-Mandalay-Monywa-Shwebo-Mandalay-Yangon. It was an awesome trip, and even compared to the other hospitable peoples of Asia, the peoples of Burma amazed me with their friendliness and warmth. In particular, I must absolutely recommend trekking around the Kyauk Me area in Shan State. It was the highlight of my trip. Anyway, I uploaded some photos and a couple of videos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mangostani/sets/72157626954526477/

If I have the time later, I think I'll write a longer trip report on the whole journey, but for now I just thought I'd say any questions regarding these places, travel between them or Burma in general ...

Several bombs went off almost simultaneously in Myanmar yesterday (Friday. June 24th) Places affected were Naypyidaw (the newly built capital), Pyin Oo Lwin ( hill station with a large military academy) and Mandalay ( 2 bombs went off here). It doesn't look like anyone was killed in the blasts though a few people got injured.

The series of blasts comes amid an armed conflict between government troops and the Kachin Independence Army, Burma's second largest ethnic armed group, that started on June 9.
Blasts were also reported in Kachin State earlier this week, in the state capital, Myitkyina, and in Bhamo, near the Chinese border.

Hi guys,

I am thinking of going to Burma for a couple of weeks around xmas new year time...

I have extensive travel experience in SEA, but have never been to Burma before. with my proposed time, I am a bit unsure of where I should go and what I should do...

I am not really too into temples, I have been to Ankor Wat and seen a million of them throughout the region, but don't mind seeing something really impressive (Bagan) as long as these places aren't too much out of the way and that's all the area has to offer.

Are there beach/island destinations that I could get to with my timeframe? How long do these places take to get too? I have heard about Ngapali Beach and the Merculiago (sp?) Archipelago...I am not a diver but I am a keen ...

Hello There,

I have had a read around the forums and also the recent travelfish article but can't get my head around the money for Burma. In particular, what combination of denominations would people suggest to take?

Lets say I stay for 28 days and budget at $30.00 a day ($840.00). I guess I would need another $100 or $200 spare also, good idea??

If this is the case, I would appreciate any suggest as to how to break that down.

Thanks for your help

This forum has been a plethora of information for our upcoming trip to Myanmar! We began this as a trip to a little Thailand, a little Laos and a little Myanmar. It is now very little Thailand, lots of Myanmar and hopeful on Laos!

So far, this is what we have planned..
Because we are using miles (Thank you American Airlines!) we do land in Bangkok. We are just going to settle in for 2 days and fly into Yangon. 2 days there, and then flying up to Mandalay, and then Sagaing. From there we thought bikes, but might go for train or other transport to Pwin-oo-lwin and onto Kyaukme and hike around. Maybe 5 nights total. From Kyaukme, train back to Mandalay and again not sure how, but down to Bagan for 3 nights. Bike to Mt. Popa. ...

Ive seen some amazing shots from people travelling through Burma with their cameras

Im wondering if anyone has any experience of travelling through there with good quality camera equipment? Im talking something like a Canon 5D Mk ii and a couple of L Lenses.

What's the reaction of the people? Will this sort of camaera attract to much attention? Will suspicions of 'Jounralist' arise? (i know they are very wary of these sorts of occupations - eg on Visa Apps)

Ive read about camera taxes at some areas of interest - wil these affect me moreso than someone with a point and shoot?

Obviously the camera will be carried in an inconspicuous bag etc and i will take all the necessary precautions not to flaunt the equipment and look after it. I ...

Has anyone done this recently?

How many days is required for processing of an application? (In my case, a US passport)
For example, if I submit everything on Tuesday, when can I pick up the visa?

Can anyone confirm that air tickets into and out of Burma are not required for getting the visa, and only photos and a passport are necessary? (I like the flexibility of not booking the exit flight yet.)

Citing an unpredictable process, travel agencies in Bangkok do not handle applications for Burma, so they are not as helpful with information as they usually are with countries in the region.
