Ho Chi Minh Trail - What's The Best & What's Paved?

I'm having some trouble determining exactly what parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail are exactly paved. Heard that north of Hue was good to ride, but even that was more hearsay than fact. Want to ride it for at least a few days, though it seems doing so in the north is much more easy and accessible... if it's paved, since we'd rather not take our mountain bikes on muddy and hilly trails for days on end if we can avoid it.

Any help's greatly appreciated,
Thanks

New Cycle Asia Series

I've just added the first instalment on what should be a 16-week series, following a group of five American travellers cycling around Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

They're sending a story to us for publication every Wednesday talking about, well, "the travel experience".

The first piece (available here) is just an introduction to "the team" -- there is a lot more on the way.

This is a bit of an experiment for us and I hope you find their travels and experiences of interest. And a big fat thank you to Anderson and Co for making the effort to put this all together.

What should I bring?

On the recommendation of long time member Tilapia, welcome to cycling section of the Travelfish forum.

To get things going, I've searched through for some existing threads on cycling, but I'm sure there'll be a host of new posts coming in now that we've got a dedicated thread for this topic.

As someone who positively belongs to the mindset of "why pedal when you've got a motorbike handy" I'm not the best equipped to put an FAQ together on this topic, but I'll try and get one rustled up in the near future...

Happy pedalling!

Hi,
I am in Vientiane, soon to be making my way southwards towards Pakse via Thakek. Once in Pakse I am planning on hiring a bicycle and spending some time cycling around Salavan, Sekong, Attapeu. I hear that doing this my motorcycle is relatively popular, though I havent heard of many doing it by bicycle. So, I was just wandering if anyone who has cycled in this area could share their experiences and offer any tips. I have about 12 days max to spend, and am a strong cyclist. Does anyone know what the bicycle hire situation is in Pakse? I would obviously need a mountain bike, not a good quality one, just one which wont fall apart.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Nong Khai to Ban Thadokkham
Saturday, May 3, 69 km (43 miles) - Total so far: 69 km (43 miles)

First it was the plane. Next it was the train. Being late that is. It arrived in Nong Khai a bit before 11am, about 1 1/2 hours later than scheduled. I wouldn't normally be bothered but I had about 50km to bike and some errands to attend to.
The first errand was finding an optometrist in Nong Khai who could fix my clip-on sunglasses. I had put them in my pocket when doing the Chinatown walking tour and preditably one of the lenses had parted company with the frame. The optometrist made an attempt at putting it back together but I have to treat them as a fragile piece of equipment. As I should have in the first place.

Cycling In SE Asia

Hello there all you fantastic helpful travellers,

I am considering cycling part of a 10 week trip in SE Asia which will take me to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (I am using the region's "explorer" suggested itinerary as a guide).

I have heard that Vietnam is good for this.

A couple of questions:
- Would you recommend joining a tour or going solo?
- Can you recommend some good tours?
- What is the best thing to do about luggage when going solo?

... and last, but not least, which are some good streches suitable for cycling?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Again,

I am doing a two week bicycle trip starting in Vientiane, heading to Luang Prabang and then I'm not sure. I was thinking about flying from LP to Pakse to do some riding around that area including Bolaven Plateau and Champasak. Does anyone know if it is possible to take bikes on the planes from LP to Pakse? If this will be a major hassle, I may just tour the north, but the south looks really great, so any input would be appreciated. I arrive in Vientiane on Feb 5 and leave on the 20th. Also, any suggestions for guides to show me around Vientiane? Thanks a million!

Dear all,

In Februari we land in Bangkok for our next cycle trip.
We were thinking about exploring by bicycle the northeast of north Thailand, which is the region of Phrae, Phayao, Phayao, Chiang Rai.
Has anyone already cycled this region of Thailand ? How did you experience this region ? Comparable to the other regions in north Thailand ?
Or does anybody know where I can find information about it ? I was in fact looking for travel reports or things like that.

Another question : is there a malaria risk in the border area with Laos ?

We have been to Thailand before. Two years ago we cycled from Nong Khai to Chiang Mai, and also visited the north of Thailand (Golden Triangle - Chiang Khong region).

I bought a bike from a guy in Saigon who had ridden down from Beijing. I cycled through Vietnam, Laos, and into Thailand, and I now have ten days before I fly out of BKK. If I find someone who is interested in buying the bike I would love to pass it one to an intrepid traveller, otherwise I will bring it home with me on the plane.
The bike runs great, is equiped w/ panears and a repair kit/replacement tubes. I thouroughly enjoyed bicycling, and if there is someone else out there who would like to experience SE Asia at a different pace, I would be happy to answer any questions/help out.
Happy travels,
