British Pounds In Thailand

Anyone have experience taking / exchanging pounds to/in Thailand?

Is it widely exchanged?

I am planning on having a some dollars for Laos but probably prefer to take pounds for Thailand if possible.

Also, £50.00 notes aren't really used that much in the UK itself but it would seem these would be better for SE Asia. Any thoughts? That is one attraction of dollars - the 100 dollar bill.

Thanks again

I am going to Vietnam and Cambodia and have heard all the stories about bank notes in poor condition. I'm an ex-pat living in Mexico and it is the same here, absolutely no torn peso or US notes. Has anyone tried using the seldom seen and used US $1 coins in lieu of paper bills. That way you don't have to worry about worn or torn notes. Also been told that the US $2 bills are highly prized. True or not? As a bonus almost all $2 notes are in mint condition. Thanks

First time SE Asia traveller looking for some last minute budget reassurance!

A little about me and the trip I'm hoping for:

- 4 weeks travel starting in mid Aug
- 27 year old male travelling with friend (sharing accomidation)
- Enjoys a beer or two (stocking up at 7-eleven is fine with me)
- Ideal accomidation is a bungalow on the beach with a hammock (nothin fancy)
- Loves street food (I only eat 2 meals per day)
- Hope to spend majority of the time relaxing on a beach, being lazy and forgetting about work
- Hope to see Angkor Wat and possibly Saigon for 1-2 days each
- Not opposed to taking trains, buses, ferries, etc

Is my 1100B/day budget delusional? Helpful suggestions are wanted! Also looking for possible cheap destinations ...

We don't mind roughing it a bit and eating street food is o.k. We arn't huge party animals but a couple beers here and there is cool.

Not including flights, how much would you recommend us bringing for the whole trip?

Thanks a lot

Budget For 7 Weeks?

Hi there.
Just need some opinions really.
Im starting in Singapore on 1st of September, doing a group tour through ~Malysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, until 25th September. (All accomodation is paid for during this time).
Then from 25th Sept until 20th October I will be spending in Thailand alone. Hoping to go to Chiang Mai, then a bit of island hopping. I'm happy to rough it a bit, and I wont be out drinking, as I'll be alone and will want to keep my wits about me!
My Budget for the whole trip is about £1000, or $1700 USD. Do you think this will be enough for about 7 weeks?
Flights paid for, Visas paid for already! Also I'm debating whether or not Malaria tablets are necessary?

Many Thanks

Hello all!

Looking for some advice...
I'll be flying into Hanoi in early September, working as an intern with the Canadian embassy until early December. For the month of December I plan to spend some time in Laos & Cambodia before flying home. I'm trying to figure out which one of the Canadian banks lets you withdraw $ (ATM) for free (or the cheapest one out there). I'm currently with the Bank of Montreal, and have been told that there is a $5/withdrawal fee.
Plan on taking several large denomination USD traveller's cheques as an emerg supply of money for when I'm travelling. Will bring some US cash with me. Debating on whether to use a credit card at all..would rather avoid ridiculous cash advance fees + interest. Would I be ...

Hi, myself and one other female friend are travelling to Thailand and Cambodia for 5 weeks next month. We plan on spending about 1 week in Cambodia and the rest in Thailand. For obvious reasons we do not want to carry large amounts of cash around with us, and I am taking a credit card which offers free withdrawls and perfect exchange rate so I can withdraw more money while I'm out there.

My question is how much do you recommed I take to get me started? I was planning on taking £200 of Thai Bahts and £100 of US dollars, as I've read dollars are used for the Cambodian visa and in most shops there. I will probably have about £20-£50 sterling with me as well as I have to travel from Newcastle to London and the same on the way home.

Do you ...

I'm passing along some information I discovered today when i went to my bank. First off, I'm using ATM cards and a little bit of emergency cash for my traveling. I went to my bank to split my accounts into two in case one card is lost and I discovered my bank (as do many others in the U.S.) block certain countries due to fraud. This means they block all ATM transactions with your card in any of the countries on the list. On my banks list is Malaysia and Thailand (two countries I will be spending nearly two months in). I had to write a written request with all the specific information on my time spent in these two countries in order to have them unblocked. Just a warning incase anyone else out there was unaware of this as well.

Hey there,
I´m Ben from Germany and I plan on travelling through the TF countries. I went Backpacking before but not in Asia.
I will go for 15 weeks so I will just focus on the very highlights.
I know there are many posts here about Budget but I couldn´t find one that fits my profile.
I don´t need a room with air con and I don´t mind if I share a room with up to 20 people.
I will almost only travel overland and always 3rd or 2nd class if possible.
I don´t need american food. I´ll be fine eating regional food from street stalls.
I do like to to Party but not every night. So I guess I will go out and have drinks like 3-4 times a week but I´m not planning on getting totally drunk but just enjoying 3-6 beers a night.
I will be changing ...

Hey guys,

I'm heading to Asia in August, travelling around Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

I want to get a prepaid travel money card from Ireland that I can load money on but has no fees to withdraw money.
Does anyone know of a prepaid card that is good or alternatively a mastercard that they found easy and cheap to use in Asia?

I'm really stuck on this one so any help would be brilliant. There available for US and UK but I cant find one for Ireland.

Cheers

Hi everyone, I'm planning on taking a gap year after I graduate high school this June and I've decided I would like to go to South East Asia!

I'm planning on going as cheap as possible, staying in hostels, etc..

I'm hoping to make it a 6 month trip, flying into Bangkok.
My very, very rough itinerary, in chronological order is:

Northern Thailand
Laos
Cambodia
Vietnam (fly from north Vietnam to Bangkok)
Southern Thailand

I may also visit Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia if there's time/ money.

Currently I'm budgeting for CAD$10,000 including flights from and to Canada, which each way will probably be about $1,500. So I'll have around $7,000 to live off of for 6 months. Is this possible? If not, how long do you think I could stay ...

As a first time traveler and lone female I am in need of some suggestions.
With all the credit card fraud and not to mention bunch of different fees/interest i'm thinking emergency only. What is the safest way for me to carry around my funds?
What really are the odds of getting robbed?? haha
I don't plan on being drunken idiot.
Should i really just lock up my pack and attach it to something immobile in the hostel (of course with no valuables)?
