I'm trying to figure out the best way to go with finances for our trip. Some helpful advice would be much appreciated. We're going for 3 weeks in Thailand. Bangkok first then to Chiang Mai (visit Dad) then Phuket down to some Islands then back up to Bangkok to go home. We don't have a regular visa card, so, we were thinking of getting two seperate prepaid visas for around $300 CAN each then use those to book online. But then pay for hotels in baht whenever we are near banks where we can withdraw using my debit card, or use the visa if we are not close to one, then carry some quantity of baht when we travel to an island. Has anyone had any problems using a prepaid visa booking hotels online etc., getting deposit back onto the visa ...

Emergency Stash Of Money

So I've read the very helpful posts that have been made about managing money, using plastic, carrying emergency cash etc abroad and wondered if a few could give their idea of emergency money.

I have arranged for two separate debit cards, one with the bulk of my money in and the other with a smaller amount in case I lose the former card, that's one measure. I am going to use ATMs instead of travellers cheques on the whole, but should I take a couple of hundred dollars of travellers cheques for emergencies? And if so, is there any reason to hide a stash of cash in my bag if I'm going to hide travellers cheques anyway?

What do you do to keep yourself prepared in case of loss of your main source of money, and where do you keep it? i.e. ...

Hey all,

I will be traveling to South East Asia for my winter vacation in January. At the moment I plan on flying into Singapore and traveling to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and flying out of Ho Chi Minh City. I realize it'll be quite intense but I'm moving back to the US next fall so I want to get a feel for the countries so I can determine which ones I want to visit for a lengthier amount of time in the (most likely distant) future.

I have $2000 USD for this trip. This does not include airfare to/from Southeast Asia, one or two flights within the region or travel insurance. However, it does include bus tickets, accommodations, etc.

I'm still working on my itinerary but this is what I have so far

Hi Everyone,

I know its done to death on here regarding Budgets. but here goes:

My plan is

Thailand 2/3Weeks
Malaysia 2 Weeks

My South Eastern Budget is £3k ($4,700 roughly). £1000 a month.
I'll be using a combo of Hostels and Couchsurfing for accommodation. From what I've been told by friends who have been have said it should be fine.

Thanks for any advice.

Hey everyone,
This question might sound totally superficial and maybe a lot of people have asked it before, but I am standing right at the beginning of my travel planning and I am planning on leaving home (which is in Austria) in 2014, 2015 the latest, so I didn't really do so much research about the topic yet, especially because I haven't finished with my current adventure yet
Anyway my plan is to travel ALL of Asia. I would leave from Moscow, get over there via Transmongolian Railroad and then just travel everything, in a time of 1-1,5 years. I would like to spend enough time to see the main sights in every country (I'd love to stay for the details too, but this would take me forever I guess). I am also considering of going to ...

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some ideas about how other people are saving for their upcoming trips. I've read lots of tips and advice, from cutting out coffee breaks and unsubscribing from magazine subscriptions (saving $200 per month atm) to getting rid of my TV (sold for $500 and saving $120 per month) and biking everywhere (free!). It was a bit harder to find a second job that fit in with my schedule but I've recently started hosting fun experiences for other travelers in my town and I'm making about $250 per month from that now. Piece of cake considering that it's stuff I would have already done.

I'm having a blast saving for my trip (Thailand in mid-2013) and I find that getting rid of things that aren't all that necessary ...

Budget For 5 Months?

Hello everybody,

Looking for some advice. I'm planning a trip to SE Asia for 5 months next year (April- September). And trying to find out what budget would be possible. Just checked some similar posts, but hardly found anything suitable exactly for me. Countries I would travel:
Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. At the moment with tickets in my hand I have £4000 for travel spendings. Is that enough for a shoestring budget travel? By the way, I would stay in the hostel dorms, eat local foods, travel by buses and cheap trains. Is the amount of £4000 is real or I should increase it?

Any advice is appreciated

Thai Bank Account

Hi is it worth opening a Thai bank account when traveling S.E.A? I'll be in thailand for the first 2months, then probably a month in each of the others. This will avoid the high bank charges encountered by using a UK card and get me a much better exchange rate too when i deposit cash. I understand there the initial risk from airport to bank but its one i'm prepared to take. Also i should imagine using a thai account will have cheaper atm charges in the other SEA counties then a weestern card?

Opinions and thoughts guys, its getting close!

I am planning an extended trip to South East Asia, Sri Lanka and India in December for a year and am quite confused about the best way to carry and spend my cash. I am from the UK and have obviously saved lots of money to go with but I don’t know what the most cost effective way to spend it is as all the different percentages and charges are quite overwhelming.

I have looked into getting a prepaid worldwide passport Travelex card or a Prepaid Caxton card and that way I can withdraw at Mastercad or Visa points worldwide and spend on this but is this the best way??

I am thinking of spreading the money over a pre-paid card, some travellers cheques and some cash and taking my debit card along also.

Is this a good idea? Can someone who ...

Hi all,

Newbie here looking for some help. After 10 years in the Army and 4 years in the London rat race I really am set on taking some time out to see some of the world from a different perspective than I have whilst serving in the military. To cut a long story short I have a guaranteed income of £750 per month. I am already starting to seriously consider a year out and with planning time I reckon I could have around 6k (gbp) in savings by the time I am ready to head off. My question is, would my £750 per month allow me to travel around SE Asia? As a former 'squaddie' I'm more than comfortable roughing it but would also like to learn to dive, go to a Muay Thai school and do some island hopping.

I would love to visit Thailand, ...

I plan on travelling for 15 in SEA with a friend, we have a budget of £10,000.. however, £2000 is for flights and an Orangutan tour, £2000 is for a dive course/ living expe/ food. accomodation in Malapascua and £3000 is to get in to Australia after on a working holiday Visa.
So, all in all, leaves us £3000 for 15 weeks of travel,
4 days Singapore
just over 2 weeks Bali
6 weeks doing Cambodia/ Laos/ Thailand
3 weeks Philippines
1 weeks maybe kota kinabalu
4 days Kuala Lumpa

Is this do-able, or are we being far to over ambicious? it works out £27 a day. But obviously, thats excluding all the travel we will be doing in places.

Any one that can offer any advice, I would be really grateful

Thank you

Hi,

I'm going to be traveling around South East Asia for ten weeks beginning late September and I'm just trying to sort out my budget and hidden costs.

I have my flights to and from Thailand and my travel insurance already covered.
I have not booked any internal travel as hope to do this mainly by land as budget as possible when I am there, and will book budget accom my whole way through.

I do however want to go to Myanmar and know that I can only enter via air. I'm not planning on doing tours constantly, and maybe for a week or so, enjoying island life in Thailand before adventuring out - perhaps doing a dive course on Koh Chang.. I think these 2 things will eat my money the most. I will eat lots of street food but will ...

Hello All,
First, let me thank all that have contributed to previous posts on this issue! I have been doing some research and still find myself confused. I am traveling solo to Cambodia from USA in a couple of months. I am concerned about how to best secure my money, and manage it while there. I have looked at the Visa Travel card although was unable to find charges for using while abroad. I also still have enough time to open a banking acct with a provider that doesn't charge a lot. I also have the option of only carrying cash which, after trying to decipher all the information on the forums, seems like the way I will go.

Please, does anyone know of US banks that do not charge currency exchange and, do you know since most ATM's in ...

Hi,
I am leaving for southeast Asia with a mate around Christmas (i know its early but i want to be organised). I am traveling to Indonesia - Thailand - Vietnam - Cambodia (hopefully) - Loas, the trip should take around 65 days. I was wondering how much i should budget? i am thinking around $4000; $60 a day, will this cover food accommodation and a fair few drinks - not including flights? I am a bit sketchy about the accommodation, will $20 each, so $40 get me and my mate decent accommodation in all these countries?
thanks

My plan is to quit my job and sell all my stuff. My budget after flight should be around $10,000 USD with the items being sold used as small savings for after i return. I pretty much just want to lounge around instead of constantly moving around seeing every sight possible. Staying in one place for 2+ weeks if i feel like it. No party/club or fine dining and OK with staying in cheap hostels. Is it possible to stay for 6 months with 10K? Longer?
