Most UK travellers know that Nationwide is the best bank account for foreign withdrawals. I received a letter today to say NW are changing my cash card to a new 'cash card plus' card. Great new features - but you can't use it abroad! Nooooo! NW wouldn't let me upgrade to the visa debit card. Bummer!

I set off next month on a RTW trip. I need to find an alternative bank account that offers decent rates/low charges on foreign withdrawals. Any ideas?

Hi

I've been collecting a few souvenirs on my travels so far and was wondering if anyone knows the cheapest country to post things home from. I would be sending it to Ireland so I imagine it would be a similar price as posting to the UK and I dont have anything big, just a couple of paintings and bits I picked up in a few markets.

I already posted a lamp that cost 150 baht home from Thailand and the postage cost 900 baht so I dont want to get stung like that again!

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Elderly people have shown their preference for living in Kochi apartments since there is only a limited area for maintenance and they also manage to interact with more people than is possible living alone in an independent house. They enjoy the security of living in a flat.

And of course, the hassles of construction would definitely be more in building a house than letting a builder build it for you. In the branded market, a two-bedroom flat apartment would cost around Rs.15 lakh or upwards. In the unorganized sector, may be a flat might come cheaper.

Kochi apartments are specifically designed to support the city's new retail businesses and cultural ventures, and they add style and elegance to the streets. Almost all apartments ...

Me and boyfriend are travelling around Thai, Laos, Camb, Vietnam, Indonesia for 3.5 months...

My questions is, is £5500 enough between us EXCLUDING internal travel costs (except the odd overnight train in Vietnam).

It's roughly £51 per day between us... thoughts?

US$ Travellers Cheques -> US$ Cash In Bangkok

Hi, we're heading into Myanmar next week and were wondering about the best (cheapest) way of getting US$ cash before we leave from Bangkok.

We have a pile of US$ travellers cheques - does anyone have any experience of converting these into US$ cash in Bangkok? We're assuming that they'll double convert them (first to Baht and then to US$), but maybe there is somewhere that will just convert them for a small commission?

Thanks in advance

Hi all ! was hoping to get some advice please...
I am arriving in bangkok on the 22 feb and fly out on the 31 March. In my time I would like to see some of the Islands and head up to laos to travel on the slow boat. Don't really have many 'plans' as I have learnt that you usually change them once you arrive anyway ! I am travelling on a strict budget (around €600). I was thinking that it would be a good idea to head to the islands first as I have heard they are more expensive and then up to laos for the remainder of my time... Any suggestions, hints and tips to make my trip more enjoyable and budget friendly would be very much appreciated !! Thanks

I just thought it was worth mentioning a product I found avail. in Australia from the ANZ bank. Its a pre-paid travel card (after some research appears to be one of the cheaper options)that is available in 7 denominations including US dollars (Perfect for my trip to Cambodia next week).

You purchase the card for $11 AUS and then load your cash onto the card at a set exchange rate (No FEE for the initial deposit) and then use it as a VISA card for purchases (no fee) or at VISA atm's (Around $2.50 USD withdrawal fee).

I have used an ANZ travelcard in Euros for a trip to Europe and it worked very well. A cost effective option compared to Credit Cards or Travellers cheques.

the website is: www.anztravelcard.com/

Internet Banking In SE Asia - Who Does?

Interested to see who banks online in SEA versus who wouldn't dream of taking the risk. I'm thinking at the moment that when I travel it might be better to leave my banking details with a family member and use email to communicate with them about transfers and statements. It'd be a nuisance, and I'd probably still need to use my card now and then for things like internal flights, but I guess it would be safer than risking it in internet cafes.

...or am I being overly cautious?

I'm flying into Bangkok possibly in May 2010. Need some advice on money matters. Still rather unsure after reading most of the money matters postings.

My rough plan:
I won't be staying overnight in Bangkok. Taking a sleeper to Chiang Mai, spend maybe a week before crossing over to Laos (via the 3 days slow boat)

Will go to the usual places like Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, maybe Vang Xai and Sam Neua before proceeding to Vietnam and finally onwards to Cambodia

My budget is
USD 5000

I plan to carry
USD4000 in Travelers cheques
USD700 in cash
THB300 in cash

Is this a good plan? Or should I carry less THB since I can always change USD into THB if i really need to.

I'm changing the USD cash into Vietnam Dong, Laos ...

Hi,

I'm planning to travel alone for six weeks around south east asia. Not planning anything flash but would like to be able to travel around by bus & train. (using the "four countries" guide above as a loose template) would £30 a day suffice for this comfortably?

Also, after that the girlfriend is coming over for two weeks and from then on the standard of accomodation and eating will have to jump up a notch. probably spend bout 4 days in bangkok and the rest somewhere like phuket/koh phi phi and probably need more cash for more touristy activities.

Could anyone suggest a budget for these two weeks of high life that may lead her to no longer look at me as the poor student I am? Also any regions where the weather will be ...

I'm travelling to SE Asia shortly for 3.5 months and am confused about what currency is the best to get in advance for travelling in Asia. We're flying into Thailand for a couple of weeks but have been before and are fine with that, but it's then onto Laos, then overland through to Cambodia and then onto Vietnam. What combination of currency & travellers cheques should I take for these countries as we've read here that ATM's in Laos are sometimes problematic and scarce?

Hi, everyone seems to agree that Nationwide is the best bank to use as the withdrawal fees are the lowest with their VISA Debit card.

I tried applying for this and they will only offer me a Nationwide Cash card account so it does not have a VISA debit card and just a cash card instead.

Does anyone know if this cash card will work in SEA and if it is still worth applying for the bank account?
