Hello,

We'd like to know if it is easy to find accomodation in villages in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos or if it could be risky to adventure through non-touristic rural areas, having the possibility of finding ourselves without a roof to sleep under...

I'm looking forward to my trip to Asia so much I completely forgot about the World Cup dates! Around the date of the first England match I was planning on crossing into Laos from Thailand. With the time difference (the games will be on at 3:30 local time I think) I imagine everything in Laos will be shut? Nightmare!

Any suggestions? I assume the games will be on in Thailand, but not Laos? It shouldn't be that important in the big scheme of things - but it is the World Cup.

Hi All,

I'm an English guy, living in Wales and have been planning my escape in my head for over a year. I came back from a great snowboarding trip with a bunch of people I hardly knew at the end of january with 11 new friends. By the first week in Feb I'd decided it was time to go find more people I'd didn't know at all, in a slight more exotic location!

So, sabatical sorted with work, one way ticket booked to Bangkok (4th May), and six months to see what SE Asia is all about. I've been reading the forums for a couple of weeks now, and helpful as they are, I'm coming down with info overload!!

I guess I have a few specific questions I'd like to throw out there.

1) 6 Months - too long to just spend in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia ...

Hi guys, I've looked through the weather info as well as reading a load of other threads, but can't quite find the answers I need. So....I'm a first time traveller looking at going to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia later on in the year for around 6 weeks.

I was looking at going around the early part of August, so I'd be there until the middle/end of September. I'm not too fussed about sunbathing, I want to do things and see things, and possibly do some SCUBA diving on Koh Tao. As a rough guide to the areas I'd (hopefully) be going to, I was thinking HCMC->Phnom Penh->Siem Reap->Bangkok->somehow to Ko Phan Ngan & Koh Tao

So basically, is this the right time to go? I've got the opportunity to extend my contract at work for a ...

My friend and I are planning a 2 month trip, backpacking Asia beginning with the Philippines.

Trying to figure out where to start planning is beginning to be far more difficult that I thought.

How much I should leave Toronto with? Do I need to figure out where I'm going and get my visas done ahead of time?

And I would like to know about ANY hidden places you guys know about too. We are trying to stay away from huge cities with a few exceptions. I think Malaysia,
Myramar, bangkok, Nepal, Singapore , Thailand, and possibly somewhere in South Korea are on the list.

HELP would be much appreciated for a brand new backpacking traveller:)

Going to be travelling for 3 months in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos and want to spend a little beach time after Angkor Wat and before the trek up Vietnam. Starting out in Bangkok, then moving through Cambodia into Vietnam, will be travelling between April to June.

Looking for some relaxing island/beach time with cheap accomodations.

Which place did you like best and why? Thanks for your responses.

We are a family of 5 - two adults and three small children. Does anyone have recommendations of good places to stay that don't cost a fortune because you are forced to get ajoining rooms. In Europe it is is easy with lots of small apartment hotels which can easily accommodate five - what is the Asian equivilant? Seems most places insist on at least two rooms and no self contained faciltiies - we don't want kids club resorts but authentic places where our whole family is welcome.

Hi,

Me and 4 friends are going to travel the region from last week of august till third week of september (4 weeks).

It is the first time we go out of Europe so I tried to include all the highlights and get a small bit of the beaten track, but not too much :p.

After extensive research on this site, lonely planet and footprint guide I managed to make some kind of itinerary. It would be great to have some opinions about it, and its do-ability :p.

1. Fly Bangkok
2. 1 night and day in BKK
3. Nighttrain to Nong Khai
4. Vientiane (1 night)
5. Vang Vieng (2 nights)
6. Luang Prabang (3 nights)
7. Flight to Hanoi
8. Hanoi and Ha long Bay (4 nights)
9. Then I'm stuck: train to Hue (1 night)-Danang - Hoi An (1 ...

My boyfriend and I are just finalising our travel plans. We fly into KL at the end of March, Traveling up north through Thailand. We then plan to Cross into Laos through Chiang Khong and get the slow boat down the river (obviously dependant on if the boats are running Mid to late April!). We will propably head down to Vientiane and from here I'm quite keen heading down to the Konglor Caves. What we cant decide on is where to go from here and where i was hoping you guys could advise?

Originally we were going to keep heading south and travel into Cambodia, taking in Angkor, The killing fields, Battambang and Phonm Penh into Vietnam - However, there seems like quite a bit of looping about traveling down to Phonm Penh then up Riem ...

Apologies for the stock question--I've reviewed the sample itineraries, searched the forum, and would still appreciate some individual guidance.

We're planning a long-delayed 10-day honeymoon for December and are struggling to decide between Laos and Vietnam (flying into Hanoi). We don't want to be spread too thin; interests include art, temples, food, street life. We've traveled in insular SEA, where my family is from, but never on the mainland. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Discovery Airpass In December

Hi,
I have read lots of information on the Discovery Airpass and I think it would suit my travel needs best but what i don't understand is if I can use my coupons for separate flights. For example I want to fly BKK-HAN, HAN-Luang Prabang and Vientiane-Siem Reap.
When I have checked the airline websites, it looks like you have to leave from the destination you fly into but we want to do some of the trip overland.
We are also travelling throughout the month of December which is obviously a busy month for travel in Asia so I am conscious of getting the flights booked or we could end up with no seat.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, I'm (26 year old girl) flying from Tokyo to South East Asia the 16th of March. The idea was to fly directly from Tokyo to Bangkok and start the trip there. I have from the 16th of March until approximetaly the 19th of April (almost 5 weeks).
I have been looking at a lot of itineraries and I am so confused. I would love to be able to go to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia (and possibly Vietnam) but the problem is that I only have 5 weeks and I have to choose the places carefully, because I don’t want to spend the entire time on a bus or on a train.

I am new at this and I’m travelling solo (which is both scary and exciting at the same time), so it would be great if you could share your wisdom with me and give me feedback, I would really ...

I want to buy a nice rain jacket and some durable hiking shoes as well as some quick trying socks but I am curious if anyone thinks that I can find these items cheaper or better quality if I wait to buy them when I arrive in bangkok?? What about other items such as laundry detergent, sunscreen, anti bacterial gels, asprin, imodium, ect.. is that all easily available?
Is there anything you would recommend that I wait to buy while I am there that I haven't mentioned in this post?? Or is ...

After using this website for months to plan for my first trip outside Europe *gulp* I still don't know what it means on here when it just says "bungalow". i.e does it have single beds or doubles generally? Also, if it is big enough for two, and two stay in it do you pay double the price quoted on here?

Hi All

Me and a friend are off on a 3 month trip around Indochina and Malaysia. We fly to bangkok on the 18th March and return from Singapore on the 14th of June.

We are 23 and 22 years old, and want to get a lot out of the trip both experience wise and culturally. Budget wise we are being fairly tight and are'nt afraid of slumming it a bit.

In terms of a route, we are thinking anti-clockwise around Indochina:
- Bangkok to Siem Reap (Angkor)
- Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
- PP to HCM
- HCM to Hanoi (Nha Trang/Hoi An/Da Nang/Hue/Halong Bay)
- Hanoi to Laos (Best route in overland??? recommendations for Laos??)
- Laos back into Thailand overland
- Then South through Thailand to the South peninsula/islands ...

Hi

Myself, my girlfriend and 2 other couples are looking to head to the above places over Xmas. We will leave the UK on December 15th and fly back on January 9th. We would like to visit all 3 places ideally. We have already been to Thailand 3 times and checked out many islands etc. We are all around 30

Main things we are looking for...

We like to party so would want somewhere popular. Things like Tubing down the Mekong river appeal

We like to chill out after partying! Would like to take in a couple of nice beaches if possible - would this be Koh Chang and Cambodia?

Not really too fussed about site seeing although would be cool to check out a coulpe of major attractions as long as it doesnt take too long out of our party ...
