New Visa Rules For Indonesia (60 Days) ?

Hi there,

I am hoping to spend 6 weeks in Indonesia in September and just read that there has been a sudden visa change for Indonesia

"(2/1/2010) In a dramatic change to the current immigration rules, starting on January 26, 2010, foreign tourists from countries eligible for "visa-on-arrival" will now be given a 30 day visa that can be renewed for an additional 30 days."

My question is, does anyone know how exactly this works? When you arrive in Indonesia, do you automatically get the 30 day visa on arrival, THEN have to apply at a later date for the next visa? Or can you get the 60 day visa straight away?

Any advice on visas for Indonesia would be much appreciated, thanks so much!

Hi there,

Im finding it really hard to find any (reliable) information for Tanjung National Park as we would like to spend 3 to 4 days in the jungle and see the orangutans.

If you've been, please help!
1. How did you get there? We want to fly from somewhere in Java but flights seem expensive!
2. Did you do a tour by klotok? If so, did you organise before you got there and who would you recommend?
And any general advice on this national park would be fabulous.

THANKS in advance! x

Hi guys
We're heading into West Kalimantan for about 4 weeks and are trying to make up some kind of itinerary which involves both some inland forest time as well as a bit of a spell by the water.
I'm having a bit of trouble finding any information in regards to beaches and islands though and was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere nice, ideally with interesting snorkeling (I know East Kalimantan is much better for this, but we just don't have the time or funds to get across there as well!). The places we've come across are the karimata Islands, Pagatimun, Randayan Island or the beaches around Singkawang (Samudra or Pantai Pasir), but we haven't really been able to find much information on any of them. Has anyone been to any ...

Hi All

My friend and I have been traveling around South East Asia for the past 2 months and are due to go to Australia on 18th January.

Due to some serious overspending we are considering cutting Oz short and extending our time here. We wondered if it is possible to fly from KL to Borneo then on to Bali before returning to Singapore for our flight to Australia.

Also, given this a fairly new idea we know very little about Borneo and could do with a few tips on how much time we'd need there and whether it would be possible to volunteer (or if not visit) an orangutan sanctuary... if so, which?

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks :-)

Hi everyone,

I actually posted this same query on tripadvisor about a week ago but not had any response - hopefully you nice travelfish people will be more helpful!

I'm hoping to visit Sumatra whilst travelling through south east asia early next year, and the places we're keen to visit are Pulau Weh, Bukit Lawang, and Danau Toba.

However I'm a bit concerned about how to travel around, as the Lonely Planet seems to suggest that it's dangerous/not recommended for tourists to travel down either the east or west coast!

So my question is - how can i travel south from Banda Aceh (for Pulau Weh)?! I'd really like to avoid flying if possible, but don't want to risk bus travel if it really is dangerous!

Any suggestions/tips would ...

Hello there
Myself and a friend are currently putting the finishing touches to a new website which aims to eventually be the best English-language resource for information on hiking/climbing the many mountains/volcanoes across the archipelago. We've listed every peak with 1000metre prominence and plenty more which are smaller but are so interesting they simple could not be left out.
To an extent, the initial success of the site will rely on comments and photos/route descriptions from readers but we also hope that it will be of use to travellers planning hiking trips in Indonesia.
Here it is....

Mosquitos In Indo/Bali

My first night in Bali was okay, you
can't judge anywhere that well on one night (unless it's at either extreme-amazing/terrible). However, I have managed to count more than 30 mosquito bites all over me including
my fingers, back, legs, feet, eyebrow, stomach, neck, armpit... Essentially everywhere

I was wearing repellant during the evening ad slept under a net.

I am not sure I can take another ravaging of this kind. It does seem like there are
loads of the buggers around. Anyone else had anything similar? I may hve to rethink how long I spend here If I keeps happening. I don't mind some but this is crazy!

Hi all,

Never been to Bali before (going in Jan)and have heard numerous stories about locals taking your luggage while you are waiting to get your visa then charging extortionate amounts for it.

Heard someone at work the other day say one demanded $20AUD!

Whats the situation? How is it best to avoid it without any conflict?

Sorry if i sound like a noob but that would be a situation that would really get me annoyed and probably end up with me telling them where to go...which i don't think would be a good idea.

MELATI HOMESTAY - visited April 09

What sort of a place can you get arriving cold and taking the first accommodation offered by a tout on the beach?
Well, in the case of Melati Homestay, not brilliant but quite adequate.

Perama’s direct boat from Padangbai in Bali had engine trouble meaning it was after dark when I hit the beach at Trawangan. I knew a couple of nice distant lodgings from previous trips but was not in the mood to hike to them. So when a local guy waiting on the beach told me he had a nice room 2 minutes away, I decided to take a look.

POSITION. Melati Homestay is 15m up one of the small alleys off the main around island coastal track opposite the boat landing area. This is a very handy location - 5 minutes ...

Given we don't cover Indonesia on Travelfish at the moment, following a request from Travelfisher busylizzy I'm setting up a few threads in the Indonesia section of the messageboard broken out into islands -- so one for Nusa Penida, another for Nusa Lembongan and so on. The idea is to provide a clearing house for traveller recommendations for places to stay while we umm and ahh about if we really want to research 17,000 islands or not!

A few suggestions and one rule:
a) The more contact details the better
b) Be as descriptive as you can
c) Please don't ask questions in this thread -- this is just for suggestions -- if you have a questions about a specific place, please start a new thread and ask away.
d) Note my emphasis above on ...
