According to this website it's been closed for months.

We made a day plan to head out there but just by fluke stumbled across this site.

Just a heads up to alter it on the travel fish guide on things to do.

However I can't confirm if it's really closed or if/when it will reopen

Chiang Mai To Luang Prabang - Need Advice

I am planning to go from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang via slow boat in Chiang Khong/Huay Xai. A few things need your advice:

1. Is it worthwhile to book the slow boat thru an agent at Chiang Mai first, or at Chiang Khong, or just hop on one in Huay Xai? Any chance of being ripped off?

2. What time is the bus leaving Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong? Arrival time? What is the latest fare? Should I take bus or private minivan, or any better options?

3. How long does it take to clear immigration at Huay Xai?

4. If I get the earliest bus from CMai, can I make it to the slow boat avoiding spending a night in HXai?

5. Is the experience any different if I travel the opposite way: LPrabang - HXai by boat?

6. What months to avoid travelling ...

Hi everyone.

We usually like to figure out travel ourselves rather than using tour agencies because it's cheaper, less likely to get ripped off etc etc

We were wondering how we can catch the local bus to Vientiane. We don't like the big VIP busses as we found you can't really see much out the windows, and a few other things while the 2nd class bus (from luang prabang) was cheap, comfortable and overall was a fine experience as far as long bus rides go.

Can we just walk up to the main road or do we need to go to that new bus station?
If so what time, we're hoping to leave early AM

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are planning to do the Gibbons Experience at the end of this month (still waiting to hear from them to actually book, go figure). We would be entering Laos from Vietnam and so would be leaving from somewhere near the park and/or Luang Namtha, not Huay Xai. Has anyone figured out the fastest way from the Gibbons Experience to Luang Prabang? Or any recommendations for a halfway point rest stop? Thanks!

Hey Guys,

Was wondering if I could get some advice on the weather in Laos (Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang) and Northern Thailand ( Chiang Mai ) in early to mid April. Is the smoke from the farmers burning unbearable?
Is it still a good time to go tubing or is the water level to low?

Also is Chiang Mai a good place to be in for Songkran? Does everything shut for these 2 days?

Thanks heappppppsss

I will be traveling to Siem Reap on Dec. 23 and leave SEA on Feb. 2 from Luang Prabang and I’m hoping to get some good tips/tricks/does and don’ts from all you travelers.

I have traveled to SEA before but not for such a, relatively, long time. Here is what I have in mind and it would be great to get some feedback what I should / shouldn’t do, what to do and maybe places to stay overnight etc. I would very much like to volunteer somewhere on the way, I know I will again go to Big Brother Mouse in LuangPrabang.

I’m planning to stay maybe a day in Siem Reap (I have already visited Angkor Wat), then on to Battambang (boat or bus), down south to Koh Kong, Shianoukville, up to PP and on to Sen Monorom, Kratie and then…. to Lao. ...

Mosquito Nets - Useful?

Do I really need to carry a mosquito net? We'll be in Vietnam and Laos for 40 days total, including some tours. It seems that most nets come either with a hook that attaches in the center or with strings at each corner. I am wondering about how useful they will be. If a room has a place to tie the hook - wouldn't it have a mosquito net? And if it doesn't - where would the net be placed? Thanks!

I just booked a flight from Siem Reap to Hanoi through Vietnam Airlines. The website didn't mention anything about a connection, but once I booked the confirmation shows a 40 minute layover in Luang Prabang. I have a feeling that the plane is just making a pit stop there and then the same plane will carry on to Hanoi, but on the chance that it's not will I have to get a visa if I'm not leaving the airport?

I'd just like to be prepared in terms of paperwork and pictures.

Southern Laos Itinerary Advice

Hey everyone,

So far my itinerary has us entering Laos in Huay Xai, slowboat to LP, bus to Vang Vieng, then bus to Vientiane. From Vientiane, I figure we will avoid the horrible bus and take the only flight we intend to take - Vientiane->Hanoi. From there we will go down the coast of Vietnam.

The trick is, I'd really like to check out some of the south of Laos too, but want to do as little backtracking as possible.

So, I'm thinking, if I can get from say Hue to Pakse, I can follow the Mekong down a little bit, and then head back to Nha Trang, thus only missing a bit of the Vietnam coast but also getting to see Southern Laos.

Can anyone provide info on a recommended sequence of destinations along those lines?

I would be forever ...

Hi
I am new to this site, but have been trawling it for a few days as my partner and I are travelling to SE Asia for three months in November beginning in Chiang Mai.In mid-Nov we start our trip in Laos (Hiay Xai --> Luang Prabang --> Vientiane --| STOP....all this is in hand (..so to speak) but from Vientiane I am not quite sure how to plan the next part

From there we want to head down to Cambodia and know the route we want to take...
-->Savannakhet --> Pakse --> Champasak --> and onwards to Veun Khong --> Stung Treng
but I can't decide on how to plan this, in terms of time to allot. I have read quite a bit and the information is hugely useful but I just can't decide on number of days to spend on this ...

Hey travellers!
So, I'm going to SE ASIA after a trip in China, where I cross over to Vietnam to do the nothern part of the contry. The plan so far is to go from Hanoi to Laos somehow and somewhere.
The question is this: What is the best way to get in to laos, and do anyone have an itinerery suggestion for laos for 3 weeks..? thinking of ending the trip with the slowboat out to thailand (to chiang mai).
I have done some reading about the subject, but is it normal to travel straight from Hanoi to vientiane? isn't there a trip from Hanoi to somewhere northeast in Laos, so one can start the trip from there?
BTW: was wondering what people have to say about the south part of laos? is it worth going there just for the 40 000 islands ...

Hey there!

My wife and I will be arriving in Xam Neua on July 14th, 2011 with the hopes of taking a day trip out to Vieng Xai to see the caves.

Will anyone else be in this region at the same time who would like to get together and cut the costs of the excursion? We are Canadians, 28 and 26, and open to anyone from anywhere joining us. With this being the off-season, the group sizes are not what they are normally and thus would be nice to share some costs.

Reply here or shoot us an email!
