Hello! I am traveling with a friend considering trying one of the many motorcycle loops famous in sea. Unfortunately we are both inexperienced, and hoping for some advice as to some ways to get comfortable and prepared for taking the journey. Can anyone ( suggest easy day trips in northern laos or Vietnam? And recommendations for what might be an easier safer route than the king lor loop? I was looking at this loop, http://www.travelfish.org/feature/19

wondering if having paved roads would make it better?
Obviously we would wear helmets, go slow, etc. Thanks!

Hi All,

I've really enjoyed researching Travelfish and related forums so far, everyone here has great info. I'm curious if anyone knows about purchasing motorbikes in Malaysia, particularly the prices to expect on new versus used bikes. I'll be looking for a 125cc that can carry me + my girlfriend. We'll be flying into Malaysia from Bali but don't know exactly where, probably Johor Bahru, Melaka, or Kuala Lampur, so I'd also be interested if anyone knows whether there is price variation by location. I've heard that the paperwork process for a foreigner to purchase a bike in Malaysia is much easier than, say, Thailand or Singapore.

We're hoping to keep costs low but find something that could take us far (with frequent repairs along the ...

Motorbiking Without License

Hi my first post on travel fish. Woo hoo.

I'm out in Singapore until December, and am wanting to embrace the lands around me. I am passionately excited about motorbiking from Johor Bahru (Malaysia) and buying a bike there, through thailand, cambodia and vietnam until Han Noi, where I plan to fly back to Singapore after selling the bike on there.

The main thing I am worried about is insurance. I am a cautious driver, but if someone else crashes into me, my travel insurance probably won't cover me as I don't have a motorbike license (they cover me up to 125CC). I have a full UK driver's license, but no motorbike license.

I am so ecstatic about this road trip, but am worried that if I have an accident, I'll be in trouble. It's not ...

Buying A Scooter In Thailand/taking It Elsewhere

Can scooters/bikes bought in Thailand be taken to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos? Only reason i ask, is i read on here Laos and Cambodia don't welcome each others bikes?! I look to buy a bike in a Thai friends name (as falangs cannot owner motors over there) who i think i can trust, and at the end of my SE loop, giving it to them as a gift.

Questions, can i take a thai bike across boarders? Can i do it with the bike NOT being "mine". Any other laws i need to be aware of? I understand its the bike that is insured as apposed to the driver in Thailand so no problem there. I am also applying for my international drivers license to cover that.

Also whats a reasoable price for a cheap scooter over there? I only want to pay maybe ...

Hi there, I'm planning a month-long trip to Thailand with my boyfriend and we really love the idea of doing at least some of the tour on scooters. I've been trying to find some more information on the whole process. I know about not leaving your passport at the rental place, the crazy traffic, etc. What I'm wondering is: are there rules about where one can take a rental bike, i.e. can you take it out of the city from where you rented it?
Thanks for the help!

Sapa-dien Bien Phu Loop Avoiding Hanoi

Hello!

My husband and I are traveling to Vietnam this November 1-12. We would like to do a motorbike loop in the Northwest, but I'd rather avoid Hanoi as it seems a bit crazy. So, the prospective itinerary is Sa pa- Lai Chau - Dien Bien Phu, then back to Sa Pa by either cutting through the park on route 279 or looping around routes 6-37-32 through Son La and Nghia Lo. Any recommendations on the itinerary? And my biggest concern is, how is the traffic around the roads up there? My husband has dirt-bike experience and can hopefully handle some muddy roads, but I'd be interested to hear about the other vehicles in the area. Secondly, are there any places to stay in the area outside of Lai Chau and Dien Bien Phu?

Thanks so much for ...

Hello fellow moto heads,

I'm travelling thru Vietnam by moto from Saigon to Hanoi, and will soon reach Hue . I'm taking a side trip to Philippines for 2 weeks (flying there and back), and will want to keep my motorbike + riding gear somewhere safely until I return. Any ideas of what the best option would be? I've only thought of (1.) if the hotel where I'm staying in Hue is so friendly that they would keep it for me then I could do that; (2.) find a secured parking lot with good rates for long-term storage (but how do I find such a thing?).

Thx for any input and help with this...

Cheers!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to warn you that apparently you can neither take a Lao motorbike into Cambodia nor a Cambodian one into Laos.

I bought a motorcycle in Pakse and planned to travel around Cambodia with it, but I had to sell it at the border. The guys there said, it wouldn't be a problem with a Vietnamese bike though.

Perhabs I should have tried to bribe them, but there were like 5 customs officers there playing cards, so it probably would have been quite expensive..

I didn't find any information on the internet on this, so I figured I'd just try.. I hope other travellers can benefit from my failure..

Hi,

Last year I rode a motorcycle around Vietnam as a backpacker (purchased in Hanoi and sold again in Saigon) - the system they have there is very organised and there are a lot of people doing it. I'm planning to head to Borneo (as well as Laos and Burma!!) at the end of this year as I Spent 3 years of my early childhood living there (in Borneo), and have always wanted to do something similar there or at least in Malaysian Borneo - is this possible? And has anyone done it before?

Whilst there is a lot of info here about motorbiking through Asia, particularly Vietnam I haven't been able to find much on Borneo. Any first hand experience would be appreciated!

Thanks in adavance

Driver\'s Licence, Cambodia

Hey All!

Anyone who knows how much it costs to take a test and get a driver's licence for motorbikes i Cambodia, and where the best place to do it is? My traveling companion hasn't got a driver's licence at all, but I have an international one, that should be valid for Cambodia.
Is it worth it to get the licence at all, or better to take the trouble, should we get pulled over?

Thanks for your help!

Ok yall,

I am wanting to rent a motorbike in Bangkok, and then travel around southern Thailand for a month, and leave it in Phuket or Krabi. Does anybody know if there is a way to get a one way motorbike deal? Would we have to purchase? We would rather travel by bike than public transport just for the ease and flexibility (plus it's way more fun).

I see all these local city-wide motorbike companies, but is there a national one or something that will let me travel one way?

Thanks!

Hi,
I bought a motorbike in Hanoi and rode it around the NW to Sapa. In a few days I will travel back to Hanoi by bus, and the bus company have said they will take the bike for me on the roof... Total cost I think is around $32.
However, when I get to Hanoi I want to transport it (and myself) to Hue and continue travelling from there. I don't really have enough time to do the journey by bike, so i've decided this will be a good way to cut some of the travel time.
Can anyone advise me on how to get myself and my bike to Hue? Is it best to go by train, or to look into another bus? Any ideas how much it will cost?
I'll be arriving in Hanoi at 5:30am (apparently... will probably be a few hours later...) on Saturday, so i'd really ...

Hi guys,

Not sure if this should go here or in buy/sell, but since it's not a classified I thought I'd put it here.

We're thinking about getting a motorcycle in Hoi An or Danang and heading to Hanoi from there. The problem is, we'll need to move the bike on very quickly (say within 5 days) as flights are booked back home already.

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what we can expect in the way of sale time, the best channel to sell a bike, and any other tips and hints associated with this.
