Hi everyone,
I want to leave to backpack southeast Asia in a couple weeks and want to include the phillipines, Cambodia and Thailand (including Ko sumui etc.). The problem is, I don't know anything about the Phillipines and I'm finding it difficult to navigate this trip by myself. I am traveling alone and have been to Thailand and Vietnam before... But I used a travel agent and did not backpack. Could someone please help. I would like to go for a about a half month.

Visa Question

Hi people,

I need some info on visa and I hope someone can help.

So, I can get 21 day visa on arrival in Philippines but apart from some other things I have to show a return ticket when I arrive.

But I want to stay more than 21 days so I want to buy the return ticket for a later time than 21 days after arrival and I want to extend my visa when I'm in Philippines.

So, is it enough that I show a return ticket that is dated later than 21 days after arrival and tell to the customs office that I will extend the visa at the Immigration Office or I get the 21 days only if I have a return ticket that is dated before the 21 days expires? In other words, is it necessary to apply for a tourist visa before going to Philippines if I ...

Short Boat Rides And Great Diving.

Hi

I am looking for a great resort with great diving in Palawan in the Philippines. Key is really short boat rides and/or a great house reef. We have a 2.5 year old son coming with us and so we need to keep close to share care and diving and even sneak a dive or 2 togeather. Places we have been that are similar to what we are looking for are Wakatobi in Indo and Roatan in Honduras...

Any ideas welcome!
Cheers

My friend wants me to visit her in Cagayan de Oro city. But I'm a little bit concerned because people says southern parts of Philippines are not that safe for tourists.

I would like to know if someone here knows the area - specifically Cagayan de Oro City and surroundings - and has any suggestions/information about this.

If it safe, what areas do worth checking around that city?

thanks

Reccommended Hotels In Manila And Angeles

Hi all,

Staying a night in Manila and then a night in Angeles on my way back from Palawan. My flight from Clark leaves at 11 so I didn't fancy getting up really early and catching a bus or expensive taxi from Manila, therefore i thought it would be best to stay overnight in Angeles which is right by the airport am I right?

Have been reccommended the Paco Park Oasis Hotel in Manila by my father (which is more than i wanted to pay but hotels seem expensive in Manila). Any thoughts on that?

What about a place in Angeles? Trying to keep under 1200pesos i guess, but any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers.

Grim note to sign off on, but it's been a pretty grim weekend overall, so why not.

Bloomberg are reporting that Five people were confirmed dead and most of the more than 900 passengers and crew aboard a ferry that sank off the southern Philippines had been rescued, while 63 were still missing, the coast guard said.

The story goes on to say that the ferry sank in the "vicinity of the Zamboanga Peninsula while bound for the central province of Iloilo from General Santos City in the south."

Weather was calm and the story gives no information as to why the boat sank.

Off The Beaten Track : Places To Recommend

Hello,

Travellers coming for the first time in the Philippines are usually sticking to a limited number of places such as Boracay or Puerto Galera island resorts, Banaue and Sagada for trekking and Palawan for the most adventurous.

In this post, I will suggest a number of destinations "out of the beaten track" if you're planning to avoid the tourist trail, or if you're running out of ideas of where to go.

*** Island life
If like me, you like the quietness of a remote island, then the RP is a wonderful destination.
* Camiguin Island, off the coast of Mindanao, is a very quiet and friendly fisherfolk island with amazing scenery. The island boasts a total of seven volcanoes, and offers a combination of very nice beaches and ...

Mindanao Safe Or Not

after more research on Mindanao is it safe to go there or not, here is the infomation i got from british foreign &commonwealth webb site

We advise against all travel to south west Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago because of ongoing terrorist and insurgent activity. We advise against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao. There have been terrorist attacks against civilian targets in Mindanao: in the past two years these have included roads, buses and shopping malls. Since 10 August 2008 there have been clashes between insurgent groups and the Philippine Armed Forces in North Cotabato, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte provinces of Mindanao. There have been reports of civilian fatalities and thousands of people ...

General Info On The Philippines

@Danny: I would avoid the typhoon season at all costs, starting in May/June and finishing September/October. As I write this post there is heavy rain in Manila again, even though we had pretty good weather last week.

Regarding the airlines, there's a very healthy competition ongoing right now. Flying here is *very*, *very* cheap(as low as PHP1000 (~15€) for a typical Manila-Kalibo flight to bring you to Boracay).
- Philippine Airlines is the national airline, with very good quality they can compete also with the low costs on the most trafficked destinations. Check for their "Econolight Fares" on their website.
- Cebu Pacific is the major low cost airline of the Phils also flying to a handful of international destinations for very ...

I'm really looking forward to your posts because I only saw Busuanga and a couple of islands off Cebu on my first trip last year and as you say, these places are not exactly off the beaten track.

The places I went to were much busier than I'd been led to expect by LP's SE Asia on a shoestring guide. Malapascua in particular was very disappointing and nothing like description in the book ... filthy beaches covered in trash with loads of dogs (and some locals) using them as toilets, very poor ...
