Taking Photos Of Children

British travel writer David Whitley, fresh off a trip to Laos has just published a piece titled "Is it ever ok to take photos of third world villagers?" that delves into the discussion of should tourists really be tramping around villages taking pics of the locals, and their children, in a "traditional" setting.

David rightly asks, how would you feel if a bunch of complete strangers wandered into your front yard and took photos of your household behaving "traditionally". You know, you raking up the leaves (pointless western tradition), your sister watching TV (western religious activity) and Mum doing the ironing (just pointless across all cultures but goes well with the religious experience pumping out of ...

Using Smart Phone As Camera?

Hi all, I'm noob in camera, so please pardon my ignorance.

I'd like to ask if anyone here using smart phone camera while travelling? I know that a proper camera is definitely better but if budget is an issue, should I buy a good smart phone (with a very good camera), or keep my old phone (Nokia 5800) and invest the money to get a decent cam like Canon S100 or Lumix LX5.

The all important question is: with the recent progress in smart phones, can it replace a mid-range camera mentioned above?

HD Camcorder And Lapel Mike (Collar Mike) - Unusual Items To Buy?

Hi there friendly folks of TravelFish, I am headed to South East Asia on a solo backpacking holiday and have started up an online video blogging website focussing on short & spicy travel secrets videos. So far, being a total amateur, I have used my trusty Nokia N95 brick of a phone (phone falls to floor, floor breaks - that kind of phone).

Am thinking of investing in a proper (but cheap) HD hand held cam corder and a lapel/collar mike. Most people been talking about photography cameras on this forum... am looking for any info and/or guidance on the purchase of a video camera (a small handheld one will do me just fine) and things like a lapel or collar mike to capture the sound.

Can the forum gurus or other experts help?

Fake Canon Lenses, Batteries And B+W Filter In Vietnam?

I am in Vietnam at the moment. In Hanoi I bought a couple of Canon batteries for my Canon EOS 5D and a B+W UV filter 77mm. Batteries were about 14 Euros each and the filter was about 17 Euros. The packets look exactly the same as the original Canon and it even says Canon on the batteries but at that prices it is difficult to believe that they are not an Asian copy (original Canon battery costs 90 Euros, B+W filter also a lot more). How do you know if they are a fake?

I don't mind too much if they are fake (at that price, it is still worth it) but I saw a Canon EF 24-70mm f4 at 620 Euros which is a lot closer to the real price but still quite cheap. I have to go back to Hanoi at the end of the month and I was wondering if there is a ...

Waterproof Disposable Cameras

Are waterproof disposable cameras available in places like BKK, Chiang Mai, Vientiane and other big cities across SEA? I plan on taking a few with me rather than buying an expensive digital waterproof camera for times when it isn't really practical to use my expensive camera (such as when in the sea). I'm not a professional or anything so I'm obviously not too bothered about image quality (in fact there is something I like about the way pics taken with disposable cameras come out). Obviously taking a load with me in my bag would be too bulky so I would like to buy some along the way.

Also, on a related note, I might take just hand luggage, so I wouldn't be able to take things like scissors etc. with me - are swiss army knives (or the ...

Hi, I'm travelling around SE Asia for about 3-4 months beginning in January, I'm planning on taking a high end P&S or possibly a dSLR with me. I have seen a lot on here about backing up pictures as you go but how exactly is this done?
My immediate thought was to go to internet cafes and email the pics to myself, but last time I tried this it only let me send about 6 pics in each email - not handy when trying to back up hundreds at a time. Another option is tweeting / blogging them, but this doesn't really solve the problem faced when I have hundreds at a time.

Some people said something about backing them up on DVD, how exactly would you do this in an internet cafe? Surely it would take ages? And I'm not sure how I feel about ...

I have been living and teaching English in Japan for the past 1.5years, and am leaving on July 29th for my "trip home" to Canada via 3-6months of SE Asia.
I bought my Nikon D5000 body w/ 18-200mm lens in Canada, and have used it thoroughly since coming to Japan. Now that my travels are coming up, I know for sure I want to bring it along to make sure I get those quality photos I've come accustomed to taking.

BAG: I have had a Lowepro Rezo 160AW bag for the camera, flash, extra battery, chargers, etc., but want to upgrade to something a little more convenient for more extensive traveling. The all weather covering is great, but it's uncomfortable and inconvenient for bringing around traveling (can't comfortably sling it over my ...

DSLR Or High-end P&S Camera?

Hi all,

I'm planning a year-long RTW trip starting next August. So far on my travels I've only used an ordinary compact digital camera, but I find taking photos to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of travelling and want to upgrade. I've played around with my mother's DSLR and love the quality of the shots, but I don't know enough of the technical side of things to take full advantage of it. I'm also concerned about the weight and safety of a big camera during such a long trip.

As a compromise I've been looking at the more expensive compact cameras (such as the Canon PowerShot G12), and I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with them? Is the picture quality more similar to a regular compact camera or SLR? Or would ...

Disposable Waterproof Camera, Pros And Cons?

Im heading to SEA with my girlfriend for 3 months from the 10th of july. she is taking her small point and shoot cannon, and i'm taking my compact DSLR sony NEX-5.

However neither of these cameras are waterproof, and i want to be able to take photos while snorkelling. I could borrow a waterproof olympus off a friend but that would mean 3 cameras between 2 people + chargers etc... seems a bit much!

does anyone have any experience with disposable waterproof cameras? would this be a good alternative?

Thanks

What About Tripods?

Hi guys,

I'm pretty torn about bringing a tripod on my 3 month trip to SEA. On the one hand, I'm trying to stay ultra light (my camera and lenses are already heavy enough!) and not check bags, so I'm not even sure I can get a tripod on the plane. On the other hand, I really don't want to miss out on great sunrise/sunset/evening photography.

Does anyone have experience with this? What about the possibility of buying a cheap tripod once I get to SEA (cheap tripod > no tripod), has anyone done that? I'll be going to Vietnam first, starting in Hanoi.

Thanks for your advice!

Hello.

Im new to this website, and have throughly enjoyed going through it. Super informative, so happy I found it before my trip. My bf and I are spending 4 months travelling through SE Asia (Phillipines, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam) as well as 1 month in China. We leave in January.

I enjoy taking a lot of photos, and have been trying to figure out the best way to back up photos while on the road. I do not want to buy a million memory cards, and would prefer to backup photos to CDs or photo sharing websites.

However, how feasible would this be in internet cafes across SE Asia? I would assume upload and download times would be fairly slow. How easy is it for them to burn images onto CDs? Also, what photo sharing website would ...

Paranoid About Bringing My Camera

I just wanted to get some opinions.

So I am going to take my camera/lense...it's worth around $2500. I ordered this pacsafe daysafe 200 bag:
http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=67

I am concerned if that's enough protection. Would that be fine in my room (or draw attention)?

Also, if I go out during the day...like in the woods and rural areas, am I safe having this camera with me?

I'll be in Cambodia for about a month or so...in Battambang, Siem Reap, etc...

I wasn't going to bring my camera, but I thought it would be a shame to miss out on taking photos in such beautiful areas.
(I'm sorry, I know the pacsafe issue has been discussed before but I wanted new/more recent opinions on that ...

Is Singapore is the cheapest place? (I don't know the prices in Japan).

What is the camera prices in Singapore compare to Japan? I guess Singapore prices are cheaper. Like to get your experience.
