Thailand Itinerary Help - 12 Days June

Hello,

I will be in SE Asia for 21 days this June, stopping off on my way from Ireland to Australia and New Zealand. I will be travelling with my girlfriend and we are both in our late 20s. We will be arriving in Bangkok and leaving from Bangkok and hope to spend approximately 8 days in Vietnam, visiting Hanoi, Halong Bay and Hoi An. We may not be in this part of the world for a long time, which is why we are trying to fit in a bit of Vietnam as well. This leaves us 12 days in Thailand and I am thinking of the following itinerary:

1: Arrive Bangkok 12:30pm

2: Bangkok

3: Bangkok and night train to Chiang Mai

4, 5, 6, 7: Chiang Mai

8: Fly Chiang Mai to Bangkok in afternoon and get night train/bus/ferry combo to Koh ...

Bamboo Rafting/ Chiang Mai

When we booked our trip to SEA the person recommended us doing a bamboo rafting experience as it's a 2-3 days journey with tribes from Chiang Mai, has anyone done it?
Also we worry a bit as we will be there during late July / beginning of August so during the monsoon time, is it worth doing it then? We will be travelling from Laos, from LP and then we were thinking about the Gibbon Experience and tree houses (although it seems to be a bit pricey... is there anything in Thailand, similar to that?)

Would much appreciate any further advice and tips! We are 3 students so rather tight on a budget, but once we are in SEA we want to make the most of it!

Hi,

well 12 days in to my 3 month trip with my girlfriend, i slipped on a wet floor in chiang rai and have well and truly broken my collar bone. I went to the hospital in chiang rai but it was pretty awful. I was offered surgery to pin it back together but in end was only given a very crap sling and some painkillers. We got a 3 hour bus back to chiang mai where my insurance told me to go to the university hospital here. I went this morning and the service was much better but again i was told surgery was not normally needed and i was given a brace to put on but it seems my bone is still sticking up towards my skin. I am in a lot of discomfort. I am due to fly home on 13th May but im realising i can not do anything i wanted to do ...

Where After Lanta??

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend will be around the west side islands for 9 days starting next weeks flying to Phuket from Cambodia,
We have stayed at Lanta before and will be returning as we loved it. I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions similar kinds feel to Lanta close by that we could also visit bearing in mind we don't want to do to much travelling as these are the relaxing days of our trip!

We looked at koh lipe but it is too long on a ferry and it doesn't appear to be feesable to get to koh Tao in one day easily from Lanta.

Also we have stayed on phi phi before and although its good, just not what we're looking for this time. Same goes for Railey as we have been before.

Any ideas???

I'm planning a trip to Thailand arriving at BKK on 27th Dec. So far we have booked a couple of nights accommodation in BKK and then we plan to take an overnight train so that we can be in Koh Tao sometime the next day. We have then booked 4 nights so we can spend NYE in Koh Tao.

From there we want to move on but are not entirely sure what the best course of action may be. We are spending NYE with friends in Koh Tao hence going there first.

Ideally we'd like to visit an elephant sanctuary, some temples and maybe some countryside. We would also like to go to Laos or Vietnam too, but we have read so much about people trying to cram too much into 3 weeks and don't want to make the same mistake.

Any help would be much ...

What kinds of experiences have you had on Ko Lanta? I may be in that area in early March and want to decide whether to visit. Any firsthand recommendations on the various beaches, lodging, local color, things to do, etc?

I read about an annual "Lanta festival" that occurs in late Feb or early March. If I go to Lanta, should I time my visit for that? How can I find out the date for 2014?

I'm a middle-aged woman traveling quietly on my own at the flashpacker/budget level. I like places that have character and feel welcoming. On the fence about needing AC at the beach. Thanks!

so im going to se asia from april 19 - may 21 and have concerns about visa exemption. i dont plan to stay in thailand the whole time but am likely to use land crossings rather than flights. so i know my options before boarding, but am looking for advice on the execution.

when does the airline usually ask for the proof of onward travel? at check in? at the gate just before boarding? is it always before the first leg (ive only got a 40 stop at NRT). just want to make sure if i chance it without anything i'll have time to book something online at the airport.

next question, which airline or website is generally used for fully refundable fairs with the least hastle?

2-3 Weeks Solo In Thailand In May

I'm thinking of a 2-week trip in mid-May (from 7-8th May) around Thailand, flying in from Tokyo. At the moment I'm simply thinking 1 week near Bangkok and 1 week in Chiang Mai , taking the overnight train both ways (or flying on way back).

1) What daytrips, sidetrips or activities do you suggest? Near Bangkok I was thinking of Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi, and from Chiang Mai, perhaps carrying on towards the golden triangle/Chiang Rai?

2) Is Sukhothai worth a visit? If so, could I hop off there on the way from BKK to Chiang Mai?

3) Will the weather be prohibitively bad in the early rainy season?

4) Instead of Chiang Mai I did have thoughts of taking a return flight to Siem Riep, or a one-way to Hanoi and seeing Hanoi, Halong ...

Confluence hunting is a very cool hobby (www.confluence.org). You must somehow get to the intersections of latitude and longitude that are whole numbers (ie. 'something' 'point,00000') all over the world.

I have now made 2 attempts to get to the last remaining, 'unfound' point in Thailand: 15 North 99 East. The point is located in a kind of jungle area near Kanchanaburi , Thailand. But my travel partners to attempt these points have already gone home!

I have just discovered some hidden roads or paths that can get us to about 1.8 km from the point - the last portion may require jungling. We would rent a 4-Wheel Drive vehicle in Kanchanaburi for about 2500 Baht/day - we can try to get the price lower.

It could be tricky to ...

Spring Haze: When And Where?

I'm visiting Thailand from mid-Feb to mid-March of 2014. Will probably spend at least 2 weeks north of Bangkok before heading south, and would like to devise a rough itinerary for that period. Initially I ruled out the north and northeast and decided to focus on the central regions, because I read that the smoky haze can start to get serious in the north around late Feb/early March.

In your experience, is this generally the case? Are some parts of the north/northeast less affected? Does the haze extend into central Thailand as well? For instance ... Sukhothai? Kanchanaburi/Sanklaburi? Khao Yai NP? Thanks!

So sad when you read about something like this.

According to Bangkokpost.com, two British cyclists on a world tour have been killed in a road accident in Thailand. They were struck from behind by a pickup truck and then run over. The driver's excuse is he bent down to pick up something and didn't see either cyclist. The report can be found here: http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/336374/british-cyclists-die-in-chachoengsao

Their own site with a plotted map and images of their journey can be found here: http://www.twoonfourwheels.com/

3 nights nong khai
3 " Loei
1 " Udon

Not sure if this is enough time or about right to have a good look around but still chill out a bit

Also not sure if we should stay outside town along the river in the villages but thought maybe a bit quiet at night.

Hotels we found are

Hirun - Nong Khai
Sirimathani - Loei
Centara - Udon

Any suggestions would be useful

Hello fellow travelers,

I've been looking for places to stay in Bangkok for me and my friend over the past few days, and quite frankly i've gotten a bit overwhelmed with the number of suitable options (I currently have 13 tabs open on my browser)!

I've read the travelfish listings, but im just curious as to what the consensus is amongst the forum members.

I'll provide a few criteria on what we're looking for, but please recommend any favorites!

- private room/bathroom
- under 1200 baht/night
- located reasonably close to markets/populated areas (still trying to figure out where the hot spots are)
- We're 25 and looking to meet people, so a hostel with private rooms would be awesome

So far im interested in:

I've happily traveled solo before, but this will be my first trip to Asia. I'm probably somewhere between flashpacker and backpacker, preferring low-key, friendly, characterful places that are a little off the beaten path. I like meeting people but am also very comfortable alone. Not looking for romance or night life -- just want to soak up Thailand's natural beauty and "real" culture. Here's my concern: I'd feel like a complete misfit in places dominated by partying backpackers, but don't want to be surrounded by families with screaming children either. Bangkok 5 nights (arrival and departure), Siem Reap 4 nights, Phnom Phen 2 nights, Vientiane 3 nights, Luang Prabang 4 nights, Chiangmai 4 nights. I am allowing the remaining days for travel and unplanned events or to extend my stay on one of the locations.
