Cell Phones And Sim Cards

Hello everyone!

I travel to SE Asia fairly often and in two weeks I'm heading back for a trip to Myanmar. I'd like to have a mobile phone this time around so that I can call guesthouses to book rooms, keep in touch with other travelers, etc...

In the USA we use a different mobile phone system, so my current phone won't work in Myanmar. I read somewhere that I need an unlocked GSM mobile phone and can just buy sim card there to use for it. Do I have that right? If so, is it cheaper to buy an unlocked phone there?

Thanks,

Hi,

With a 7 week trip coming up to India, Burma and beyond, I need to buy a new pack but I have a fundamental point I need advice on.

(BTW - sharing cost with my dad so we can afford a decent one between us).

Seems there is a new style of pack, designed for adventure travel, which cost about the same, hold about the same, but seem to weigh MUCH less. Examples:

Lowe Alpine Travel Trekker II
Deuter Traveller 70+10
Berghaus Jalan II 60+15

All three of these seem light, good quality and apparently designed more for travel than for trekking / hiking.

On the other hand, there is what I think of as a more "conventional" pack, which is also front-loading but might serve me better in future occasions for more traditional ...

Advice On Bag Size

Hello everyone,

I've seen here and elsewhere that there is always some debate over optimal bag size. I can also understand the pride it seems many have in their minimalist approach.

I've decided on the Osprey Farpoint (original, I know), but I'm now debating between the 55L and 70L options. Most seem to recommend bags in the 55L range. For the Farpoint, a 70L is actually a 55L main pack with an attached 15L daypack (so "55L" is 40+15). When people recommend a 50L backpack, do they mean total or specific to the main pack?

I'll be traveling primarily in SE Asia for about 2.5 months. This is my first backpacking trip. I'm sure I can pack within the smaller pack before leaving, but I am also planning to get a suit made while ...

Proper Backpack For SE Asia

I'm currently looking for a suitable backpack for my 2 month trip to SE Asia. I live in Denmark where the backpacks are extremely expensive, so i've been browsing the UK sites for a backpack i could get shipped over here. I don't think i will be doing too much hiking, so i have been looking at the Osprey Farpoint 70, which i can get for 100 pounds plus 20 for shipping. Would this be a suitable backpack or should i try to find something more expensive like the deuter aircontact?? I would rather not spend too much on a backpack, but I don't won't a backpack that I will get tired of during my trip.
Thanks in advance

Hi guys - I will be heading to the US for a a week or so in May, and thought that I might take advantage of the better prices there to replace my backpack in my renewed efforts to downsize. I don't know what brand yet (if that matters) - that's what I'll start researching soon. But I'll aim for a quality brand (eg North Face, Osprey....).

I'm not too familiar with the stores there... can anyone recommend any particularly good ones to check out in the San Francisco area (CBD-ish area) or Wash DC area (pref near Herndon/Reston)?

Hi,

Going to SEA April - July for 10 weeks and would like some backpack recommendations and advice. I think I'll be in all sorts of weather and situations so... roughly...

20th April - Bangkok 1week.
28th April - Chiang Mai/Elephant Conservation 1 week
5th May - Siem Riep/Phnom Penh
20th May - Vietnam south-north (Saigon-Hanoi)
20th June - Hiroshima
1st July-5th July - Mt. Fuji climb and Tokyo
5th July - Home.

Anyone with knowledge of these areas will greatly help if you have experience of travelling with just a carry-on bag (about 44L?) - what backpacks are good and the essentials (light and less as possible) to survive comfortably in these situations!

Thanks

65L Pack Too Big For SE Asia

Hey guys

I'm going to SE Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand) for 6 weeks. I have inexpereincly bought a cheap 2nd hand black wolf cedar break backpack that is 65L +10L daypack. After reading around it seems that it is too big, and I only need a 50L backpack.

Firstly, i was wondering, is 65L too big? I wont be packing it near full when I depart, but hopefully it may come hand y in purchasing thins. Otherwise is it worth selling it and buying a smaller pack (preferably with a daypack?).

If so , does anyone have any good recommendations for a travel pack suited for the job?

Cheers!

Looking at getting the Osprey Farpoint 55 for upcoming backpacking trip around SE Asia (10 weeks) and onwards to Australia and NZ.

It seems to have all the features that I'm looking for, but wondering if many out there have used it before and your practical experience of it?

Thanks for the help!

I have one week left before I make my way to SE Asia - thank you again for your amazing help and advice. I was shopping yesterday and came across a compact mossie net and was tempted to buy it. Just wondered what the chances are of finding hostels which have places for you to hook the central bit to the ceiling on are? Do you think it's worthwhile buying one or no point unless camping?

Hey Guys,

Im travelling around far east asia for 2.5 months (sept-november) and then flying to australia to begin a years work visa. I will be travelling in australia but obviously it will be at a much slower rate than my asia travels as i will be looking to find jobs on the way to gain money.

I was wondering what back pack would people recommend and what are the definite essential items I should pack?

Ive never travelled before and im literally clueless on what to take. As usual ive left everything to the last minute and havent bought anything yet.

Many Thanks,

Having Internet Access On Your Phone When Travelling

I have an unlocked HTC Desire, and in Malaysia I purchased a SIM for it, with 3G internet access.

Well, the internet stopped working the next day, and when I went to get it fixed I was told that the phone is not compatible with their network because I got it in a different country. So I have to get a different phone (the phone calls work fine)

Does this mean that I have to buy a new phone in each country?

So if spend a couple hundred dollars buying a new phone here in Malaysia, it won't work when I get to Thailand and buy a new SIM, and I'll have to spend another couple hundred? This is ridiculous, I thought the system worked better than this.

Hi there.

I am planning my medical elective and getting quite confused on what kind of backpack I should get.

My trip requires me to pack for sun/rain/humidity in Borneo (4 weeks) and also camping in alpine conditions in the himalayas (4 weeks).

I do not have to carry camping gear (cooking equipment, tent..ect) just my sleeping bag, clothes and personal things.

Any advise on size and brands would be great!

Thanks,

Hi. I am traveling though Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam end of July and August. Not ideal but that is the only time we can go. I have been told that we should expect lots of rain, landslides etc
What wet weather gea should I bring? 'breatheable' lightweight rain jacket?
Also...definitely want a rucksack or suitcase with wheels but was told not to bring a hard case but all the rucksacks with wheels are 4kg + and as budget airlines only allow 20kg that quite a chunk of weight allowance (we are going on to India after SE Asia). Does anyone know a lightweight wheeled rucksack that doesn't cost a massive amount?
