Anyone Use Compression Sacks Or Packing Cubes?

I am debating buying a compression sack (often used for compressing sleeping bags) and using it for my clothes. I got the idea from a blog (Legal Nomads) and it seems like a good one. Especially as I will have some 'work clothes' with me that will not be needed for the first month and, likely, the 4th month. I could just make sure there were at the bottom of said sack. Also, it seems like it would decrease the space taken up by clothing.

Then again, there are also packing cubes. I don't like the look of these as much and they seem to be dying out - not much availability in the UK - but wondered if anyone had used either of these things?? I am definitely considering a small cube just to keep all my dammed electrical cables nice and ...

Anyone Travel Wearing Nike Free?

I have these nike free 2's that i wear for general working out and im thinking that this will be my shoes for my 4 month se asia trip. I realize i will be walking ALOT but these shoes are very lightweight and the tops are mesh so very breathable. Im just worried that since they are so flexible that they may not be the best for walking long distances with a weighted backpack. Any input?

I tried searching for some good info and didn't find much...

Does anyone have advice for protecting your backpack while traveling SE Asia? I'm wondering how people fair while leaving their backpack in a hotel room while going out with their daypack. I feel that I would be somewhat paranoid that a cleaning lady would go in and walk off with it. Is it best to just have it on you at all times? What about when swimming. I'm planning on bring a pad lock of some sort to hopefully chain my pack up to a tree or pole when I hit the beach or something. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be traveling relatively light I think so I don't see having the pack on me most of the time as being a problem...but I would like to dance, swim, etc. at ...

Hiking Boots in SE Asia. I know that these are not generally recommend, however, It seems like I might need them. I have intentions of going to Nepal eventually and would need to buy some more gear (warmer stuff probably), I also want to go up a few Chinese mountains, as well as Borneo I would like to walk up MT. Kinabalu.

However, I am debating whether I should buy them before I go or when I'm there (in KL, for example). It is likely I could make do with TEVA's for the first 2 or maybe 3 months anyway, apart from MT. Kinabalu which would be in the first week.

Any other warmer clothing I would just buy out there but it just seems like your boots will be invaluable for any trekking. I would also add I wouldn't be doing anything to ...

Insect And Midge Repellent

Hi all, I have recently discovered a fantastic insect repellent product, vie patch. The Vie Insect Repellent Patch is a godsend to midge-bitten hillwalkers and mosquito-plagued tourists. This ingenious transdermal patch delivers Thiamine, a natural ingredient, straight into the bloodstream. Because insects a reverse to all things Thiamine-related, when the substance excretes naturally through the body’s sweat pores, the insects buzz off in search of someone else to bother. Providing 36 hours protection against midges, mosquitoes and other dreaded pests, the Vie Insect Repellent Patch is so discrete, you won’t even know you’re wearing it. The insects will certainly know however, which is why they’ll grant you such a wide berth. I ...

Using Kindle 3G In Asia

Here's a question for Kindle users who have used the 3G version in Asia. I am tossing up between the WiFi only and the WiFi/3G versions. By the time I comvert the price from USD to NZD, there's a fair bit of difference in the price.

In terms of downloading books, I would be happy with WiFi only capability - I just need to be organised to get download books ahead of time.

The only reason that I am really considering the 3G is for travelling - it has the potential to provide internet access which is useful for quick email checks, browsing TF and maybe using Google Maps to find places. In other words, this could be considered a potential replacement for my netbook - at least on shorter trips.

So my question is - how well does Kindle ...

35 + 8 Or 65?! 9 Weeks In SE Asia

Hey,

I'm going to be travelling for 9 weeks through Singapore, Malaysia, Thaialand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and South Korea between August and October and I'm struggling a bit with luggage choices!

I have a Berghaus Verden 65 +10, and a freeflow 35 & 8. I have no idea which one to take. Also I'm a bit confused with clothes choices for that time as I'm hearing mixed advice, some are saying shorts and tank tops, others are saying trousers and shirts as to not insult any cultures.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

35- 40L Backpack In Wet Season?

Hi

My girlfriend and I are going to SE Asia in aug, sept, oct.

We both need a 35-40L backpack. I suppose built-in rain protection and a lot of air between the back and the sack is important.

We are 193 and 160cm tall.

We are willing to pay around 100 Euro, and we need to be able to find it in Europe.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

I am leaving May 22 for a 4-6 month trip to SE Asia(hopefully longer if I can stretch my budget) and I am having a lot of trouble deciding on what type of pack I should get.

Here are a couple I have been looking at:

After nearly 2 years teaching English in Japan, I am taking off on July 29th for China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, (maybe) Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and whatever else I can see before I run out of money.

I bought a used travel pack from a former teacher -- Solo-Tourist bag (found on "value products Japan" website) -- a year ago. It has served me well enough for a couple short trips to Taiwan and Okinawa, but it wasn't the most comfortable. I also felt that the top loading was pretty annoying, especially when customs wanted to root through my bag or when I needed clean clothes or something...
It is a 50 or 60L bag (not actually sure).
I think investing in a new bag would ease my mind for my trip.

As an addition to 'travel footwear?' what is the word on closed toed shoes for temples. At this point I've seen countless folks wearing flip-flops (thongs) and sandals at temples throughout Thailand and Laos.

Do the locals not care anymore or are tourists just being insensitive and they're letting it go because of consideration for our ignorance? It seems covered shoulders and long pants are still necessary (especially at important sites in BKK). I'm just curious.

Has anyone any suggestions on what make/brands to go for?

I know alot of them are expensive but if they are something thats comfortable and lasts for the 6 months then I'm fine with that.

Yep, soon heading to SE Asia, and I am on low budget, I was just wondering if it would be good idea to take a tent with me. Is there many guesthouses who offers like a garden or place to camp for a night cheap? Idea is not to camp all over SE Asia but to save up some money by not living in guesthouses rooms... Is it worth to take a tent?

Thanks.

I will be leaving in 5 days for a 14 month trip through SEA, bhutan, nepal & India & I am having a few last minute packing panic attacks.
The big dilemma: shoes. ( Gawd, it's ALWAYS the shoes, isn't it girls?) I was thinking of bringing tevas & flip flops until i arrive in bhutan (my sister is mailing a package to my bhutanese guide that would include a lightweight pair of low hikers.)

Can I manage without closed toed shoes until then? I will be in thailand, cambodia, indonesia & myanmar. I am not a big trekker so will not be out in the wilderness too much.
I know MADMAC will be opposed to not having closed toed shoes on principle, but what does everyone else think?

1. Rucksack
2. Universal Plug (absolutely a must)
3. Pegs (use them almost every day for all sorts of things)
4. 2 x Facecloths - very handy
5. Tissue paper and wet handy wipes (essential for toilets) (Tissue papers is easy to get here but handy wipes - haven't found any yet).
6. Toothpaste (Am now down to Thai brands which are sugary - wish I had brought more with me from home)
7. 2 pairs of shorts - the ones with pockets on the side for wallets and paper are good.
8. 4 sarongs, good for extra bedding, covering well used cushions, etc. 2 would suffice, but I like sarongs.

I've bought a Berghaus freeflow 35 +8 to travel with for 3 months. I thought I'll travel light and save some energy rather than swing a huge pack around with me.
