Question About Insurance For US Citizens

Hello,

My question is for fellow Americans, as rules/laws regarding insurance probably vary by country.

I'm traveling in a couple of weeks to SE Asia and will stay for a month. I'm going to bring my new Mac Book Air, camera gear worth around $1500, $1500 in cash and some other items of value. I'm going to Burma so I have to carry such a wad of cash around with me. I stay in low-end guesthouses and last time I was always worried that I'd come back to my room and would be missing my camera lenses, computer etc...

What's the best kind of insurance to get. I always get World Nomads, and I'll do so again; however, it only covers up to $500 in personal property.

I live with family at the moment, so I'm wondering if I'd be better off ...

Explorer Travel Insurance?? Anyone Used It From The UK

Hey guys,

So I'm planning a solo trip to SE Asia this summer after uni. So I've been looking around for insurance. World Nomads popped up but I see a lot of people here think World Nomads is too pricey, so after looking at alternatives I've come across 'Explorer Travel Insurance' via comparethemarket.com.

Has anyone used it before?? Particularly from the UK??

Are they good? Reliable?

This is my first time ever doing something like this, so I don't know what I'll be doing or what I won't do. I'm not an idiot or too much of a risk taker either, so I'm looking for Insurance that'll let me explore Asia and try new things without being too scared of whether my insurance covers me or not.

Anytips are absolutely welcome.

Thanks guys

Hi,

I set out on a 3 month trip to south east asia with my girlfriend only to break my collar bone badly in Chiang Rai 12 days in. Holidaysafe insurance got a good write up by which magazine and their policy sounded pretty good, if not quite cheap. I had a nasty break which meant my bone overlapped which normally needs surgery. The hospital was so bad in chiang rai that we got the bus back to chiang mai and were told by our insurance company to go to the university hospital. I dont know whether i just had a bad experience but the place was manky and the doc was on his iphone with it to his ear while manipulating a very sore broken bone on my shoulder. I waited 3 DAYS for the insurance 'doctor' to get back to me after sending him ...

No Travel Insurance Proves Costly For Phuket Tourist

The Phuket News has the wrap on an unfortunate 30 year-old British tourist who had a heart attack in Phuket and is now in a bad way in hospital. He forgot to get travel insurance before leaving. According to the story his hospital stay has cost 10,000 pounds so far and ongoing costs are 2,300 pounds a day.

Says one of his travel companions:

"Everyone else had it [travel insurance], and I told him last week, make sure you get your insurance, but he forgot. It's not a good idea, and now it's turned out to be a very expensive mistake.

For the sake of 50 or 100 pounds (B2,000-5,000) it's not worth taking the risk. Especially in a place like Thailand. People think it's all palm trees and lovely beaches, but if you fall ill out ...

Travel Insurance For Americans

I am an American traveling to Southeast Asia for 2 months and I am covered under my parents health insurance, but it doesn't apply in the countries I will be visiting.

Most of the blogs that I have visited recommend World Nomads, but I am worried to trust some sites because they advertise that insurance company. Can anyone honestly recommend a company?

I also could add international insurance to my existing plan, but that won't include lost baggage and other travel related issues.

What is the best way to get covered?

Thanks!

I've been perusing these forums for a while now, and they've been incredibly helpful in planning our trip to SE Asia this spring. I'm still a little confused about travel insurance, though. Most of the information I've found is directed at Americans who are doing short term travel while still covered by their employers' plans, or at non-Americans who live in countries covered by national healthcare plans. Any insight from someone else who doesn't fit in those categories?

My husband and I are quitting our jobs in February to spend three months traveling. As US citizens, our health insurance is tied to our employers, so leaving our jobs means we have to shop for individual policies. Not a big deal to us, we're both young and healthy (so ...

Hi,

Wondering if anybody can give me some advice as to whether there are any insurance companies out there who will cover you for any accidents etc. when riding a motorbike. I have a UK car licence, but this doesn't cover bikes. I want to do a few tours whilst in Asia, but obvioulsy I would prefer to be covered for this. I do have time to do my CBT before I go, if this will make any difference? Also, will most insurance companies cover for travel on a motorbike as a passenger?

If anyone can give any advice/point me in the right direction that would be great!

Also any other tips you guys have when it comes to picking insurance

Hi

I am looking at travel insurance for a longish trip at the start of next year. Ideally I would like to take my macbook air along with me but looking at World Nomads travel insurance, they only let you add 'high value' items up to £400 per item. The laptop cost me about £1200 6 months ago.

Is there a recommended policy/company that will allow you to cover these higher value items?

thanks

I will be in southeast asia for 6 weeks in July and August. I am already covered for medical, although I have been looking into baggage coverage. I will be taking my fairly new DSLR camera, and also my iPhone (both of which I plan on having on my most of the time). I will also have a new backpack, as well as obviously all my travel documents which would add up if I needed to replace them. My camera is over $1000, which I am finding is a value not normally covered so I might have to settle for only partial coverage. Any recommendations on whether it is worth it to get coverage for my belongings and which companies offer the best rates (Im canadian). Also, please no snarky remarks about bringing expensive items.
Hi,
I'm planning a 9week trip around SEA next months... I've phoned my insurance provider here in the USA (Aetna) and have spoken at length with someone there... They insist that I have the most comprehensive medical cover (arranged through my fathers' employer) that will cover me for medical expenses whilst abroad... I asked about re-patriation to the USA, motorbike coverage etc... The lady seemed adament that I'd be covered... Since i'm not planning on taking anything that I would cry about if it were lost or stolen (plus the excess would probably be hundreds of dollars anyway...) i'm considering going WITHOUT additional insurance (since medical coverage would be the main thing i'd want it for...)
The thought of doing this makes me ...

I am insured under the NFU for up to 90 days and this is NOT extendable, however I am travelling for about 120 days (first 3 months in SEA, then 1 month in Australia).

Can I just take out insurance from any company for the last 30 days, or does it have to be for the whole thing?

If anyone has any recommendations of good (UK) travel insurance companies that would also be cool, although I'm sure I will find some pretty swiftly when I have rifle through the travelfish forum

I notice most of these annual travel insurance policies offer no cover for being a passenger on a motorcycle.

So if you go to Phnom Penh, Bangkok or wherever & get on one of their motorcycle taxis, then if the worst happens, as I read it your medical cover is invalid.

This is going to be very inconvenient.

Looking into getting travel insurance for my upcoming trip on the 28th and as a resident of the USA I noticed a new option comes up that wasnt there when i looked a month or two ago. Im now given the choice between "Standard coverage ($217)" and "Explorer coverage ($287)". Explorer seems geared more towards the extreme adventure types as many excluded sports like caving and such seem to covered. Also the coverage amounts rise several hundred thousand.

Just letting those who might not know already thats theres now an option covering the more adventurous among us.

If you spend more time on the road than off it, this info may be useful .......

Up until recently I was fairly restricted to World Nomads for my travel insurance as they were the only company I was aware of that a) will insure you if you're not currently in the UK or b) if you are in the UK don't insist on you having been there for the previous 3 or 6 months in order to take out a policy. Whilst I was perfectly happy with World Nomads (although not having made a claim don't have reason not to be), their prices have crept up recently particularly now SE Asia is in the same risk category as the USA!

If you're in a similar situation you may want to check out Worldwide Travel Insurance www.worldwideinsure.com who were recommended to me ...

Backpackers Insurance - V - Annual Travel Insurance

Hello all!

Could anyone advise me what insurance is "better" - backpackers or annual?
Im going backpacking to SE Asia (i.e. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam) for 36 days, and cant make up my mind which one of those 2 to choose.
Ill definitely be going (if nothing happens during this SE trip :] ) back to SE (but different countries) next summer.
As much as Ive already searched, backpackers insurance seems to be more expensive (for the period of those 5-6 weeks costs a few £ less). Can anyone suggest which one is better for me, "not that real" type of a backpacker? Many thanks for your thought!
