Help Someone In Need

A close friend of one of our researchers, Englishman Carl Bart, is in a coma on Ko Samui after having a motorbike accident. While he was insured when he left the UK, the travel insurance lapsed and he wasn't able to renew it while overseas. As a result of this, his family is looking at £65,000 to £70,000 in total to get him home.

This is not money Carl's parents have and they've taken a mortgage to raise some of the money, but they've launched a public appeal to try and raise the extra money needed to get him home.

They have set up a website to raise awareness of their plight and you can read more there.

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times -- do not travel without adequate medical insurance.

Does anyone else have any other companies they use that are cheaper but still reliable?

Firstly, let me say that I don't need this currently. I am safe and the NHS is my protector.

What happens if, for example, I am in Laos or Indonesia etc and I think I have just been bitten by a rabid bat. I seem to remember that World Nomad give you a phone number so, I guess I would have to get to a phone as quick as possible. Then what??!?

What happens if I am incapacitated, taken to a local hospital and, somehow, airlifted to Thailand. Will they have had to find my insurance to do this or just arrange it and leave me to foot the bill?!

I tried finding some information out using Google but gave up after trawling through 4 pages of insurance sales websites.

I hope I never have to find out but it seems crazy to just presume that, if ...

Hi, we will be travelling through SE Asia during September, October and November as a part of our big move to NZ. We are not returning to UK, and this seem to complicate our chances to insure ourselves ...the other hurdle we seem to not being able to jump over is the fact that we will be staying for some 45 days and most insurers we contacted so far deemed that too long. Anybody ... anywhere ... any ideas??? Would be great to get few tips. Thanks beforehand ))

How Long Do You Recommend Cover For?

Hey all,

Have glanced through earlier posts, and can't see if my question has previously been asked/answered. I'm heading off in January '11 to travel around Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malayasia, before heading on to Australia where I intend to stay for (at least) a year on a working holiday visa.

I was looking for people's advice on whether or not I should only get cover for my time in Asia, or if I should extend it for perhaps my first few weeks/months in Australia? I am planning on also travelling to New Zealand in September & October for the Rugby World Cup, before returning to Australia. Should I perhaps take out a 10-12 month policy with a view to extending it if necessary?

All tips/advice gratefully recieved...

Thailand Is 2nd Most Expensive Country, After US, For Inpatient Hospital Treatment

Very interesting story in the Guardian concerning the need for travel insurance when travelling to Europe. What raised my eyebrows was this par:

"From an analysis of travel insurance claims, the most expensive country for inpatient treatment is the US, with the average hospital visit costing £6,000 last year, 10% more than in 2008. The next priciest is Thailand at £2,750, followed by the Canary Islands at £2,500. The cheapest country is Bulgaria, with the average visit to hospital costing £500, a 5% increase year on year."

Granted this is perhaps swayed somewhat by the type of medical claims that would be claimed under travel insurance -- eg motorbike accidents etc, but still, found it very surprising.

Travel Insurance - Excl Nomands

Hi All,

I know that the most recomended on this forum is Nomads. BUT it is very expensive and comes to £300. for 2 for 3 months. It looks like flexicover/insure for/covermore can give me an insurance around £70/person for the whole year for the same thing! Even virgin is £50 per annum.

Due to that I am really lost. I need the one which will look after me in case of emergency/medical problems. And the one which will pay me rather than try to get out of paying ( Tesco is a good example of cheap but bad service company )

My problem is that I am going to to SEAsia for 3 months so I need an insurance that will cover trips of min 3 months.

Has anyone used flexicover, covermore or virigin? How are they in emergency cases? Or are there any ...

Thailand Insurance Reccomendations

Can anyone recomend a company that will cover me for travel in Thailand despite the FCO advice??

I put off getting my insurance becasue I'd been reading that no companies were covering people, now it looks like if I'd got it early enough I'd have had a bit of coverage.

I'm not 100% fussed becasue if I can't get cover and the advice doesn't change I'll just spend more time in the other places I'm going to, but it'd be really nice to be able to travel round Thailand anyway

So yeah anyone know of any companies that'll cover me - I'm not worried about the cost, just the coverage at this point.

Hi All,

I am about to head off on a 12 month RTW trip starting next week. I am now looking into travel insurance and can't quite work out which group to go with. I have seen that World Nomads are pretty much the best regarded group through which to get insurance, but there are a few things that put me off them a little which I was hoping to get your guidance on. In particular, I am looking at the Worldwide, including USA, Canada, The Caribbean & Japan policy which comes to £382:

* they have a single item limit of only £100 for valuables. I am taking my Nikon D90 with me, and £100 would only cover 10% of this if it was stolen
* their level 1 sports coverage does not include Scuba diving down to 30m (most basic travel insurance does ...
