I'm planing to spend about 4 months next year traveling through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, but I am a college student. I will be taking all my classes online so all I need is my small laptop and internet access to get by, I'm just wondering if there is any type of wifi i can purchase that I could use all over. Or just in general how to go about accessing the internet in south east Asia.

I will be traveling throughout South east Asia this fall and winter. I'm looking to buy and bring an iPad with me to have Internet and keep in touch with back home. Would there be any benefit to getting the 3G option? Or is that just asking for a headache? Not sure how SIM cards and data plans work there. Thanks for the insights.

Is there such a thing as a SIM card that works in multiple Asian countries (Malaysia, Cambodia, Hong Kong) or do I need a local SIM for each country to avoid roaming charges? If I need multiple SIMs, what would be a good prepaid SIM for these countries. Can you even get SIMs out of iPhones and will it mess up all the apps if I change the SIM? I bought it outright so I don't think it is locked to a carrier.

Iphone Unlocked In China

I've had my iphone swiped and unlocked in China so I can put in a Chinese sim card and have used it perfectly fine.

Since it's unlocked now can I do the same in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam?

I'm not counting on my wifi b/c the unlocking process totally killed the speed of my phone and it's basically useless except to make calls.

Thanks

I just posted some info in another thread about some things that I used on my netbook when travelling, and thought this might be a useful thread in its own right – let’s hear about your favourite and most useful apps when travelling.

NOTE: This isn’t intended to be a discussion about ‘should I bring my netbook’ or ‘where can I buy a cheap iPod’. There’s lots of other discussions for that elsewhere.

So… to get the ball rolling, here are some of my favourite apps that I use on my netbook when travelling:

Skype (FREE) http://www.skype.com
Need I say more? Cheap or free phone calls home, and SMS text messaging. Free video chats with friends who are also on Skype. Another cool thing is that I now also use Skype from my home ...

Hi, im travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos for 2 months from August and would like to know the cheapest and best way to call home! I do not really want to be confined to internet cafe's or anything like that so is it worth getting a roaming sim or a sim from the above countries? Or is it worth just sticking to internet cafes and telephone boxes?

Hi all,

My Macbook just died and I want to pick up a cheap netbook as a substitute. We are travelling longterm, currently in BKK.

Where am I likely to get the best deal? Bangkok, Malaysia or Singapore? Seen decent brands for 9990 baht + 7% VAT on an initial sweep of Pantip Plaza, but will be in KL soon.

I travel a lot and I like to have all of my reading material available to me wherever I go. I picked up an iPad a month ago and think it's a great way to consolidate news and other deliverables... but the iPhone works just as well (albeit with a smaller screen).

For Magazine subscriptions, I use Zinio. I have about 20+ subscriptions that sync over the air directly to my device. It's such a pleasure not to have to use iTunes to do this! After some teething troubles - and frequent crashing - the Zinio team have made a stable application that is improving all the time. Over the last couple of weeks, it has been given a speed increase - although, scrolling magazine pages is still a little slower than I would like. Zooming in on a page is ...

URGENT-netbook Vs ITouch

Hi There,

I'm heading to South East Asia on Monday for 4 months - visiting Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and likely the Philipinnes. From the other posts, it sounds like wifi is fairly accessible in most places in these countries (only big cities or small ones too?) but, what about at the guesthouses/backpacker accomodations? I am debating taking an iTouch vs a netbook. While the iTouch is handy, my biggest concern is being able to face-to-face skype with my boyfriend (preferably directly from my room). But, if wifi isn't generally available in accomodations in South East Asia, then I'll take the iTouch (which only allows for voice skype, not face to face).

Please let me know your thoughts soon since I leave in ...

Hi im planning on going on a 5 month trip in the new year around SEA my question is would YOU take a notebook with you?

I am aware of how cheap public computers are however it would be nice to have your very own computer? Or would it become annoying to carry around?

Would you spend $700 on a netbook or would you put it towards your trip?

Please tell me your experiences!
