EReader - Kindle Or Kindle Fire?!

Hello
This is my first post here and I'm after some advice please. I'm leaving for South East Asia in 2 weeks and am dithering about taking an ereader or tablet. I've narrowed it down to either getting a Kindle Paperwhite for just reading (as usually I end up carrying loads of books) or getting the Kindle Fire so I can read and get internet access for research, booking accommodation, internet etc.

I'm going for 3 months and travelling alone, and not a tech-head at all - so any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Useful Stuff To Take On A USB Memory Stick

So 4 months of not preparing has finally come to its end... I leave for my first ever travelling experience in 7 days; a slow jaunt around Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Bali.

I'm not taking any technology except a basic mobile phone so that I can keep in contact with others I may meet on the road, and so will use internet cafes on the odd occasion no doubt. Firstly, my concern is internet security... would I be safe logging into my online banking using these computers? I'm guessing it's a bit hit and miss, and so is there a way of minimising the chances of being stung by a virus? I'm thinking maybe a portable browser and if there is such a thing, like a portable firewall for my memory stick? So that's the priority question ...

Do You Keep Track Of Your Goals/achievements Online?

Hello all,
I've recently decided to keep track of my goals and achievements. I was unable to find an app that can help me do it efficiently so I built it myself.

It's called Bucketlistly.com

The app basically allows you to store your goals online as a public profile page allowing anyone to see your awesome accomplishments. You can also attach photos and location to your accomplishment to proof that you've really done it and the app will share it automatically to your Facbeook/Twitter/Foursquare.

It's the ultimate tool for tech savvy travelers who wants to broadcast their "achievement unlocked" moment.

I would like to invite you guys to check the app out and maybe provide feedback so that I can improve the product to ...

Can anyone offer some advice o what connections are like / costs etc.

I'm going to be heading to SE Asia this summer. I'll be in Siem Reap for 8 weeks from the end of may through mid July and then I plan to travel around between Thailand and Laos.

I was ready for a camera upgrade and I just bought a Canon Powershot S100. Now I'm second guessing this because I'm worried about always having it some sort of camera waterproof bag that I know they sell now. I know they sell some pretty nice waterproof cameras now, but I'm a Canon girl at heart and I just can't pull myself to make a switch. I definitely plan on hitting up Krabi and Railay for some adventures. Does anyone out there use any of those water camera bags? Thoughts on them?

Hi

Im travelling to SEA for seven months and hoping to cover north thai, laos, vietnam, cambodia, south thai, malaysia and singapore. I'm confused as to which would be the best means of technology.

I would use it mainly for facebook, skype video call, online bookings and a little for ebooks and music. I currently dont have either but am looking to purchase one or the other. For the internet i would turn off data roaming and just use the wifi. I like the fact with the iphone i could buy a local sim for each country to make calls however i have heard you are unable to take the sim out of iphones so would this be impossible?

Has anyone had any experiences with either an ipad or iphone? Im not particularly good with technology!

Thanks ...

IPod Touch Apps Without Wifi

Hi,
I am planning on taking my iPod Touch around SEA with me next month, but unlike an iPhone it won't have 3G or anything like that... I'll only be able to have internet access when I can pick up Wifi.
Does anyone have any advice on Apps etc that work offline? I'm thinking of two in particular here - the Travelfish city guides (obviously!) and a translator (with speaker)
Does anyone know if these will work offline once downloaded and installed? I'm guessing the guide probably will, but the translator? Will I need an active internet connection every time I want to translate a word? If so, i'll probably go with the old-school phrase book. Can anyone recommend a good one for Vietnam?
Thanks!

I bought a new netbook in Thailand recently and have to install a firewall within the next 48 hours when my free AVG trial thingy runs out. I've waded through reviews on CNET and PC mag but am still dithering about which one to get.

The editors of these sites recommend Norton but I'm wondering how heavily Norton sponsors their sites. I had Norton years ago and hated the thing. Maybe it's better nowadays though?

Comodo and Zone Alarm have free firewalls which seem pretty good but they say the average user might find them too complicated to use because they bombard you with popups asking whether or not to allow programs. I'd describe myself as a below average user, not at all fluent in IT gobbledygook. Also people say Comodo and Zone ...

I will probably take it with me anyway even if I don't unlock it as I use it for taking photos sometimes and can use it to access wifi, although it will be pretty pointless if I can't make calls with it.
