URGENT-netbook Vs ITouch

Hi There,

I'm heading to South East Asia on Monday for 4 months - visiting Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and likely the Philipinnes. From the other posts, it sounds like wifi is fairly accessible in most places in these countries (only big cities or small ones too?) but, what about at the guesthouses/backpacker accomodations? I am debating taking an iTouch vs a netbook. While the iTouch is handy, my biggest concern is being able to face-to-face skype with my boyfriend (preferably directly from my room). But, if wifi isn't generally available in accomodations in South East Asia, then I'll take the iTouch (which only allows for voice skype, not face to face).

Please let me know your thoughts soon since I leave ...

Hi im planning on going on a 5 month trip in the new year around SEA my question is would YOU take a notebook with you?

I am aware of how cheap public computers are however it would be nice to have your very own computer? Or would it become annoying to carry around?

Would you spend $700 on a netbook or would you put it towards your trip?

Please tell me your experiences!

Electricity Converter/iPod Question

Is anyone an expert on voltage issues? I want to be able to charge my iPod using a plug while in SE Asia. I have a device my friend passed along to me that says SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY. The input is 100-240V-.2A 50-60Hz. The output is +5V=1.0A MAX. My iPod says it's rated 5-30V-1A Max so it sounds to me like I could get an adaptor for the local plugs and use my SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY and it wouldn't fry my iPod. I don't want to buy/carry a heavy converter if I don't need to so I'd appreciate anyone's opinion. By the way, my SPS is a lot lighter than the electricity converter I saw at Radio Shack... if that matters? THANKS

1° Free Hot Spots ~ They are often not where you want them to be. Either advertised or you just try to connect to some hotel and it works.
2° Internet cafes ~ 1 Baht/min They are everywhere, haven't tried rural areas though...
3° (Some) places you stay ~ you pay 50 Baht, get receipt with username, password and 2 hours, which you can use through the day.
4° 3G: buy sim card for 50 Baht, load it with 350 Baht, insert it in your netbook (mine has 3G module built in, alternatively you need usb dongle). Metered on volume, good for checking email and light surfing only, should last for 5-6 hours. Or you can put sim card in your phone and have a local number.

Hey Travelfishies!

I have been trying to find up-to-date information on Phnom Penh to Koh Chang. Everything that i seem to find is a few years old now, and i know there must be improved services now - even tours - that specialise in this.

i have read the best route to take, but i am hoping someone has done the trip in the last few months and knows where to look/head online for this trip booking.

thanks heaps

Hi

One Netbook For 3 People? What Model?

I have only started to research netbooks and would appreciate a jump start in figuring out what I need.

We are 3 people [me, hubby, 7 yr old daughter] traveling for 2 weeks and will all be doing alot of digital photography-2 of us with high resolution cameras. We need a netbook that downloads our images quickly since all 3 of us will need to download nightly onto 1 machine and then probably do some on-screen editing to preserve storage space.

I know I need to estimate how much storage space we need--just haven't done so yet. I have seen comments about SDs and SSDs and don't really understand what they are, if netbooks have hard drives, how you upgrade storage capacity, and how any changes increase the total weight.

Hi there,
I am having an 2-hour stop over at Taipei airport on my flight to Vietnam. Since in Europe there's a lot of "made in Taiwan" for electronic stuff, i wondered if it is worth to wait buying for example Digital-Camera equipment, I-Pod stuff etc.

Has anyone any experience, is there a chance to get some bargains on electronic stuff?

Thanks,

Hi everyone

Im going travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos as part of a RTW in September.

I know the laptop question gets asked so many times but i cant seem to see what i want to know.

I have an old laptop which i wouldnt be distraught if it got lost/damaged whilst i was travelling. Being an older model it is relatively heavy so i was going to leave it at home, but some friends have recommended taking it for using wifi when im away.

I was thinking of getting an ipod touch for wifi instead but as i dont have one yet im not sure how easy they are for this purpose? I have an older ipod already which i can use for music etc so the ipod touch was a cheaper/lighter solution for the wifi aswell as using it for watching dvds, ...

Enough WiFi Bandwidth For Mass Flickr Uploading?

Hi all,

I'll be travelling to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand from mid September for four weeks and am trying work out my best option for backing up photos on the move.

I'm a keen amateur photographer and have been known to take over 1,000 pics in a day whilst travelling (this is the very extreme of course, thanks to all the pretty shrines and temples in Kyoto last year). Realistically I expect to take anywhere between 0 and 300 pics a day. My main camera is 10MPx and so even the JPEGs are around 4MB each (I've given up taking RAWs when travelling).

So, given the volume of photos, the options I had for backing were either:

1 - Buy a load of SD cards and carry them around in something waterproof or maybe mailing them ...

Insane IPhone Bills

If you're travelling with an iPhone and plan to use it while travelling in Asia, be very very wary of the roaming charges you may be picking up along the way.

Guests staying with us for two weeks recently returned home to a telephone bill in excess of A$4,100 -- for a phone that had not had a single call made on it.

The culprit is "data roaming" and what you need to do is switch that off and only use the data functions (web surfing, emails etc) via WiFi (which, in most cases will cost you nothing).

Contact your telecoms provider for more info.

Solar Power Chargers

I think I've decided where I'm going snorkelling next trip but there's no electricity on the island and the place I want to stay doesn't have a generator...oil lamps in the huts and solar power lights for the restaurant.

Charging camera/torch batteries is going to be a wee bit of a problem after a few days and I'd quite like to spend a few weeks there.

As paradise islands of the beaten trail can be a wee bit dull in the evenings, I was thinking of investing in a netbook+DVD or a small laptop too. It would be useful for storing pics and I could watch the odd film or maybe download some books. I MIGHT even write a travel journal, but don't hold your breath Somtam! ;-)

Have anyone tried a portable solar power charger thingy? How ...
