HCMC was a worthwhile experience, usual problems of a huge city, 2 days enough, plenty good cheap hotels.Dalat odd, nice in a cheesy way, scenery ok, but "new" road to N.Trang FANTASTIC!!!!
N.Trang something for everyone here, superb beach and harbour.Mui Ne wow this is beautifull beach, for miles, but expensive until you get towards the "old town" end, the fishing fleet is stunning and you get to see normal life of Vietnam, FINALLY ok travel by bus, A-B, BUT rent a motorbike and explore when you get there !!

Travelfish ran a 5th birthday competition with loads of great prizes last summer and I was the lucky winner of one of them… an open water dive course on Ko Tao … so here’s my trip report.

I did my course at Master Divers which is run by Ayesha (who posts on Travelfish) and her boyfriend Wilco. All the staff there are very friendly and from what I saw it was a pretty professional outfit as far as the diving is concerned too.

Ayesha and Wilco helped me find (discounted) accommodation near their dive school during my course and Charlotte the receptionist was a mine of information about good places to eat on Ko Tao. Ayesha also kindly sent me my coursebook to Bangkok so that I could study it in advance.

I’m a keen snorkeler ...

Bueng Kan, Thailand (January 2010)

It isn't covered by Travelfish, but Bueng Kan, along route 212 midway between the towns of Nong Khai and Nakhon Phanom , is a good stopover point for bicycle tours or others making the trek along the Mekong River. There isn't enough here to make it an intentional destination, but if you are passing by this way, it is a pleasant enough spot to spend a night.

Bueng Kan itself is a typical, unremarkable Isan town. There isn't much to see here, and exploring the entire place on foot, including the pleasant, park-like setting along the riverfront, only takes about an hour. Local folks are friendly enough, and many people still ride bicycles to get around this quiet town, particularly in the cool of the evening along the ...

Border Crossing - Lao Cambodia

For those interested in this crossing - it's an interesting one as the Cambodian guards are still on the take. Quite funny though

Lao side ask for a $1 US to get the passport stamped
(a) you can get away with giving a small amount of Kip and say you haven't any other $'s
(b) pay up the $1US
(c) don't pay - then they wont stamp the passport - you go to the Cambodian side and they wont take you and send you back to the Lao side - they laugh (especially when it's hot)

Cambodian side - now this was a laugh

(a) got out of bus and a small tent setup on side of road with (probably a guard) with a Dr's mask on and some other people. They go to take your temperature with an ear thermometer, but he points it at your forehead from ...

Itinerary Assistance/ Diving Assistance Needed.

Me and my girlfriend are going travelling for 6 months in SE Asia.
Were looking at 1 month in thailand, 1 month in Vietnam, 1 month in Laos, 2-3 weeks in Cambodia. 2-3 weeks in Malaysia, 1 month in Indonesia. And 1 month in the phillipines.

I no it's a silly question but will we be able to "see everything" in this time frame? We want to try and use bus/trains as much as we can. But will fly if we have to. We also wanted to do a padi open water dive course at somewhere near the start of the trip. Any suggestions for the best (still cheapish) place to do it?

Thanks. Dan. X

Good hotels, from what I thought was a reliable source.
Bi Saigon in HCMC.
Helpful people, good sized rooms.
BUT Run down and dirty. That is my wifes view.
Angella in Nha Trang.
Good bet we paid 28 US a night including breakfast. Just off back packer zone and 7 mins walk to beach. Best bet Louisiana brew house on the beach for chilling out. You can use their pool as well for the price of 25 000VND
More to follow. Oh yes train Journey an adventure, the Hotel Bi Saigon whacked us for tickets, but frankly small beer. Bunks small even in class one if your biggish. Great fun, but difficult to find food , so go prepared ! More info to follow

2.5 Months Thailand/ Malaysia / Indonesia

Hi everybody,

We are planning our trip to Thailand / Malaysia / Indonesia. We have about 2.5 months to do the trip (June-mid August)
And we still need some advice:

We are planning to go to Thailand first (Bangkok), stay there some days, travel down to Koh Samui, Ko Tao and Ko Pha-Ngan. Fly to Chiang Mai to see the north and then back to Bangkok.
From Bangkok we would like to fly to Bali and see Indonesia- traveling towards Jakarta and fly from there to Kuala Lumpur, see Malaysia and afterwards fly back home from Singapore.

Now, the questions:
First of all do you think 2.5 months will be enough time to do a trip like that? Is it too much or could we do a bit more? Borneo would be also interesting!

There will be some ...

My first trip to Phnom Penh was initiated as a result of a great deal offered by Jetstar. I booked us for 3 days at the Intercontinental , hoping a good hotel room would keep my son and husband suitably pampered while I traversed the city!
Phnom Penh is not my first choice of a travel destination in Cambodia, as my dream is to go to Siem Reap and photograph the temples of Angkor . All the same,a dear friend(who lived in PP for four years) had shared enough stories to make me want to visit this city purely to get an insight into its gory history.
Three days later, as I sat on the
plane back to Singapore, I felt I had a better understanding of Cambodia and its people. What will stay as a lasting memory is the spirit of these ...

I've already written extensively about the cycling trip that I just completed with my wife and three other friends here: Cycle Asia, and on my blog Watch Out World!
I've just completed a 55-minute movie, combining photos and videos with music. It's obviously aimed at my friends and family, but if anyone is interested in seeing what a SE Asian cycling trip is like in much greater detail, you can download the film here:
A SE Asian Adventure.
Hope you enjoy it if you've got time to watch it,

This was originally posted by Shahmatt here, but I've reposted it here. Somtam2000

Hi everyone. My brother and I spent 5 days in Vietnam last week. Here is a review. Warning! Long read ahead :-)

We landed in Hanoi on Thursday night at around 8pm and took an airport shuttle bus (30,000 Dong each) to the Hanoi old quarter where our hotel was booked.

This was the Hanoi Cozy hotel. On arrival the hotel manager informed us that he had our booking but the room was on a "high floor" and there were no lifts. He offered to accommodate us in Grand View Hotel, owned by the same company. I was resistant at first since this seemed highly unorthodox, but he assured us that the rate would be as quoted for Cozy hotel and he said it was a ...

Over Christmas and New Year we spent 4 nights at the Orchid hotel in Hue and a total of 5 nights in Hoi An (3 nights at the Vinh Hung 1 Hotel and 2 nights at the Vinh Hung Riverside Resort).
We thoroughly enjoyed Hue due to the great choice of hotel and the time we spent with Mr Trung of DMZ Tours. We booked a family room at the front of the hotel although there was just the two of us. The room was quite a large suite with a king and single bed and small balcony. Although our room fronted onto the street it was not at all noisy. Like most other reviews we’ve read, we found the staff at the hotel were excellent. The highlight of our breakfasts was the range of fresh fruit - we counted 9 different varieties.
We toured inner ...
