Hi folks,

I'm developing a short itinerary with Vietnamstay.com and was offered a price of 319$ for 2 nights at the Intercontinental Westlake hotel and 1 night aboard the Bhaya cruise. Could any of you here advise if it's good value for money and if the company/boat operator is legitimate.

How Should I Distribute My Time In Laos & Vietnam This June & July

Hello all.

First off I would like to say thank you for all the information and opinions I have found on Travelfish; it has helped me greatly.

Regrettably I am at an impasse in terms of planning my upcoming vacation in June and July. What I already have is the following:

Jun 3 – Jun 8, Hong Kong
Jun 8 – Jun 13, Bali

So that is all I have. I am pretty much firm on the duration I plan on having in those two places (but let me know). Now this is where I need help.

From June 13 to July 9, I plan on visiting Laos and Vietnam. (I had originally planned until July 2nd but I am pretty sure I can extend it until the 9th)

The way I have it at present is as follows:

June 13 – June 16: Vientiane (2 full days)

Kampot -> Ha Tien + Phu Quoc Ferry Schedule

Hi,

we're thinking of doing the Kampot -> Kep -> Ha Tien -> ( Rach Gia ->) Phu Quoc trip later this week and I'd like to ask if someone has done this trip recently?

How much should we expect to pay for motodop/tuktuk from Kampot - Kep and Kep - border/Ha Tien?

From an earlier post I read that the last (only?) ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc leaves at 13.00, does anyone know if this information is still up to date?

If so, it would make it possible for us to do the whole trip in one day which would be great!

Someone had also reported that the trip is possible in one day via Rach Gia as well. At what time does the last ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc leave?

Thanks!

Indochina’s old dame, Hanoi is striving to modernize, yet unwilling to let go of the beauty of its glorious past. Slightly vain, the city won’t bow down and give any tourists and easy time. Only those who are truly willing to understand and listen will recognize the logic of Hanoi's beauty, the complexity of its chaos and peace, its urban speed and rural tranquility.

History and name
Hanoi used to be called Thang Long (flying dragon). The myth was that in 2010, the new king Ly Cong Uan while visiting this valley saw a dragon flying into the sky, and took this as an omen that this place was a suitable capital to rule. Thang Long had rich soil and good defense because it was surrounded by the Red River and backed by mountains.

- How to get it? You go online at http://www.vietnamvisaonline.net, fill in the secure form, and just wait 1-2 days until you receive your Visa Approval Letter, and take this + your passport + 2 photos +stamping fee to Vietnam to get your visa at airport.
My first post on travelfish !!

The day i arrived i randomly met another traveler who told me about another (naive) traveler who got invited to a Vietnamese house to teach one of their kids something on the computer.. and you guess the rest of the story.. there was no kids.. it turned bad and the guy did end up at an ATM withdrawing a shitload of cash for his Viet "friends". I suppose this kind of stuff is not rare, and people dont brag about it when it happens to them..

Anyway, today (march 14th 2010) i was walking across the park in front of Pham Ngu Lao (backpacker area) and got interpelled by two womens who wanted to help me because i had some problems with my map... I wont get into the details, but it was the same kind of ...

I've just arrived in Con Dao and found the situation somewhat different from info I'd read. Given how little information is available I thought I should report on the situation I find here.

The cheap hotel is full, and seemed very noisy anyway. I tried to book before I came but as they speak no English and my Vietnamese is not much better, we failed to get anywhere. The resorts are all pretty expensive for the budget traveller, and far more expensive than I've seen reported anywhere.

Saigon resort has a new building, which is very glamorous but not to my taste. I was offered the old building- quite interesting with a nice garden- for $40 (actually $46 when you add the taxes)but told it was "not secure". They were right; anyone ...

On Our Way Up North - Which Beach?

Hi, I'm new here would love to here your opinions on our itinary.

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Vietnam (3 weeks, end of May). We're doing the "standard route" but from HCMC up North via Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi, Halong Bay). Now we're looking for a nice beach towards the end of our journey ... which is not that easy since (as I understand) the nicest places in Nha Trang/Hoi An. Is Cat Ba Island an alternative? Or should we rather plan a longer beach stay in the middle of our tour - if yes, any advice where? (We're thinking of Whale Island, Cua Dai or Doc Let?)

Thanx a lot and happy travels :-)

Cheers,
Hemsi

Pre-arranged Visa For Vietnam

Hi, i've used an agent to get a visa on arrival for Vietnam, and have been sent the emailed document to print out and present on arrival in Hanoi airport (from BKK).

I'm very confused now, as i've read contradicting info here and on other sites about whether this is a legitimate way of getting a visa. Some people have said a visa on arrival does not exist. I'm setting off in 7 days, and i just want to make 100percent sure with the travelfish experts that i will be able to enter Vietnam with this pre-arranged visa.

Please set me straight once and for all. Thanks in advance, Mel.

Understand from man in seat 61 that trains from Hanoi to Haiphong take about two hours. My question are, has anybody tried this way, how easy is it to book a day cruise arounf Halong Bay, which company would you recommend. Unfortunately we are limited to a day trip only.
Leaving Luggage For A Day Trip

I'm wondering how safe it will be to leave my luggage in my room while I day trip in the Mekong? I'll be staying in moderate lodging (not high end and not dorm style). I plan on staying the night and exploring during the day - is it safe or even common to leave my larger pack at the hotel? I'm traveling with medical supplies and donations for an orphanage and don't want to drag them around all day long if I can avoid it. Of course I will take my valuable items with me but I don't want to lose a pack full of medical supplies either. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hey,

we are backpacking through Vietnam for about a month and need somewhere to store our excess baggage for that time. probably 2-3 bags.

we have tried to find some hotels that offer a free baggage service but when we call, there seems to be alot of difficulty conveying what we are in need of. we will stay in HCMC for a few days, so we would be staying at the hotel that stores our luggage.

Does anyone know of any hotels/ storage facilities that are not too expensive for 1 month storage. (apparently the airport has lockers but hey are $4 a day per bag, which works out to be quite expensive)

thanks you very much!!

Hi,

We are doing this trip in April, and we are flying a couple of legs to save time. (Hanoi - Phu Quoc)(PQ - HCMC). After reading the old posts about travel to Cambodia via Mekong Delta, Im thinking I should leave three days for this, instead of two. Any advice on what you would change. (one less day in Sapa maybe?) Any comments you have would be helpful. Thanks!
