Canon Powershot SX110

The Canon Powershot SX110 is an all-round impressive compact camera, boasting a comprehensive feature set. Running off the spec sheet, you're looking at 9-megapixels a 10x optical image-stabilised zoom, Genuine Canon Face Detection (just in case you can't pick out faces in your photos), a 3.0-inch LCD screen and red-eye correction. The camera stores all your neat pics on a SD/SDHC memory card. Another nifty feature is that it is powered by AA batteries -- so while it makes sense to use rechargeable AA batteries, any AA sized ones will do in a pinch.

On Amazon.com, the SX110 gets four and a half stars out of five -- based on over 200 individual reviews -- that's not half bad. But it's not just on Amazon that people rave about it -- Travelfish member, SBE, recommends the SX110 saying

"I hesitated between a Canon SX110 and the TZ5 ... both have 10x zooms, large bright screens and get good reviews. I opted for the former and I'm very pleased with it. Unlike the TZ5 it has manual controls (which I will get round to learning how to use one day) and I prefer the image quality of Canons. The TZ5 does have the advantage of having a wide angled lens but it was also considerably more expensive. Another thing I like about the Canon is the fact that it uses rechargeable AA batteries which saves having to cart a dedicated camera battery charger about. 2500mA rechargeable batteries give you plenty of battery life but you can even use ordinary AA batteries in an emergency."
