Pacsafe VentureSafe 25L

Stuff you may find useful

At 25 litres, the Pacsafe VentureSafe 25L is probably too small to be used as the primary pack for most travellers, but it makes for an ideal day pack -- so good in fact, that if we hadn't promised to give the pack away (Pacsafe supplied us with a complimentary pack to review), this would almost definitely be the one we'd travel with on our next trip. It is, quite simply, outstanding.

Pacsafe has built their reputation around creating packs that are secure and their entire range is built around four core anti-theft features. I've never seen a pack with as much attention given to security as this one. The VentureSafe 25L is fitted with eXomesh Slashguard in the front and bottom panels. This high-tensile stainless steel mesh is laminated between the fabric layers and will protect your bag from being slashed open. Admittedly this is more of a dire problem in other parts of the world than Southeast Asia, but it does happen here as well.

Pacsafe VentureSafe 25LSecondly, the shoulder straps are also slash proof (and by the way, I've never felt a pack fit as snugly and comfortably across my shoulders as this one). Thirdly, the base of the right hand shoulder strap can be unclipped so that you can clip it to something fixed. Lastly, the zippers are tamper proof. By tamper proof I mean there is a semi-hidden clip that each zipper can be clipped into. The idea behind this is to keep wandering fingers at bay, but I'd venture that after a few days of use you may become a bit complacent as they are a little fiddly -- especially when the pack is full. The zipper on the main section has eyes you can thread a padlock through as well -- a very good idea.

Inside, the pack has a laptop sleeve for laptops of up to 13" in size (unfortunately too small for my Toshiba Tecra -- another reason to get rid of the darned crappy computer, actually -- but those with a smaller laptop will find it ideal). Aside from the main compartment there are two smaller sections and two side pockets by the waist. Probably my only complaint about this pack (aside from that I couldn't keep it for myself) is these side pockets are very tight -- especially when the pack is full. Normally I'd want to stick a water bottle in one of these, but there's no way it would fit with the pack full.

As I mentioned, it's a very comfortable pack to wear, with padded air mesh back support, side compression straps and padded shoulder straps and I don't mean to go on about it, but it is an incredibly comfortable pack to wear.

Now I started this review off by saying this is a day pack rather than a backpack, but if you're travelling light, don't have a laptop or chunky digital SLR (and all the cables and junk that come with them) and have decided to skip on those pesky guidebooks, then for a lightweight traveller in the warmer climates, you could get away with this pack -- and it is easily within the carry-on limits for most airlines.

Overall the VentureSafe 25L is an excellent product and I don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, lightweight and very secure small pack.

Many thanks to the smart cookies at Pacsafe who sent us this pack to review on Travelfish.
