If you're looking for a dusty, non-descript town along Route 8, Na Hin is a good option. But what makes it an even better option is that there's growing activity in Na Hin centred around its usefulness as a base camp for trip to Konglor Cave and treks within the Phou Hin Boun NBCA.

It's another one of those Lao towns that's going through a name crisis -- locals only seem to know it as Na Hin, but maps often refer to it as Ban Kheun Kham, or even Namsanam, which is the name of the nearby waterfall.

It's mostly visited in transit or overnight as part of a two-or-three day trip to the caves that begins and ends in Tha Khaek, but the increasingly list of things to do here might soon entice travellers to stay here longer.

The road from here, south to Konglor Cave, is currently under construction and will eventually be paved. Right now, the first half is well-packed dirt, and the rest is really rough and mostly impossible to navigate in the rainy season.

Na Hin has no services, though there's a new guest house in the area, the Mi Thuna, out on the main road, that promises to have all sorts of amazing things -- including internet access. Otherwise, the nearest services are in Lak Xao, 70km east, and Vieng Kham, 45km west, both along Route 8.
