Udomxai province
This long, thin province is wedged between the Mekong River to the south, Luang Nam Tha and Bokeo provinces to the west, Phongsali province to the north and Luang Prabang province to the east.
Most travellers find themselves in Udomxai province either sitting in the riverside boatstop of Pakbeng, or the mountainous truckstop of Muang Xai -- in both cases generally on the way to somewhere else. Nevertheless, this large province is a lot more than a truck-stop.
Those with time on their hands should consider spending some time around Muang Xai, particularly the northern town of Muang La, which is quite an interesting yet laid back spot, that gets very little tourism.
