Chachoengsao province
Barely registering on a foreign traveller's plans, at first glance, the Bangkok-satellite province of Chachoengsao appears to be one giant shrimp farm. Over the years, with fast money to be made in shrimp farming, Chachoengsao has seen most of its paddy dug up and converted into the shrimp farms. While there's many questions regarding its long term viability, the farmers, at least in the short term, seem to be doing ok.
Aside from prawns, Chachoengsao is home to the famous temple Wat Sothon and the provincial capital has some pleasant enough river scenery. The other main claim to fame are the mango and coconuts -- all very good -- be sure to try some when you're in town.
The province came to historical prominence in the mid-16th century, when a Khmer King invaded and enslaved much of the population here, rounding them up for a move to neighbouring Cambodia.
