Also known as Khorat, Nakhon Ratchasima province is Thailand's largest and the same-named provincial capital, Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat), is Thailand's second largest city.

Regarded as the gateway to the northeast if arriving from Bangkok, Khorat province is generally the first place many visitors stop within the northeast -- partly due to it's ease of access by both train and bus, and as it's home to enough points of interest to keep most visitors busy for at least a few days.

The province's prime attraction is the spectacular Khao Yai National Park and some well restored Khmer period ruins at Phimai. While the latter can be visited on a day trip from Khorat, the former is best approached from the small town of Pak Chong and in any case, you'll need more than a daytrip to get much out of the national park.

Other attractions incluce high quality silk products at Pak Thong Chai, archeological digs and the famed pottery at Dan Kwian -- and that's all before you consider the provincial capital itself.
