Bordered by Chiang Mai to the east, Tak to the south and Burma to the west and north, this far-flung northern province is deservedly becoming one of the most popular with travellers. Spectacular scenery, beautiful rivers and hilltribe communities provide plenty of fascination.

The standard itinerary for exploring this province is to follow a loop, beginning and ending in Chiang Mai, passing through Pai, Soppong, Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang and then back to Chiang Mai. Although this loop can be done in three days or so, you could spend a few weeks exploring the region.

One of the best ways to get around is to hire a motorbike from Chiang Mai, which allows you to easily explore off the beaten track. Be warned: some of the roads are very steep and windy and are only suited to more experienced riders.

You can also do the loop by bus (get on early to get a seat). If you're rushed, the flight to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai is relatively inexpensive.
