Da Nang province
Originally a part of Da Nang Quang Nam Province, Da Nang was split off into a province of its own in 1997, reflecting its economic importance to Central Vietnam. The province is the smallest in the region but plays host to more than its fair share of attractions and gets a steady stream of visitors, in part due to its having an international airport. If you're rushing to Hoi An, chances are you'll be flying into Da Nang.
The province is wedged against the coast like a slice of apple between Quang Nam province to the south and Thua Thien Hue to the north. Aside from the eponymous provincial capital, Da Nang is also home to the Marble Mountains -- unsurprisingly a series of hillocks made of marble -- and China Beach, made famous by the Vietnam War-themed TV series of the same name. Well known for its beaches, Da Nang draws a steady flow of surfers who come for its uncrowded waves and long stretches of empty sand.
Most independent travellers and backpackers tend to give the provincial capital little thought, planning on heading quickly either south to Vietnam's shopping Disneyland of Hoi An or north to the imperial capital of Hue. The town itself however is worth more than a cursory glance, with attractive tree-lined streets and friendly people making it well worth at least an overnight stay.
