Quang Nam province
Until it spun off the industrious city of Danang into a province of its own in 1997, Quang Nam province used to be known as Quang Nam Danang. Today it may as well be known as Hoi An province, as 99.9% of the travellers and tourists who opt to visit choose to stay in delightful Hoi An. While the World Heritage-listed town is developing a Disneylandesque feel to it, it should still be considered an essential stop for a first trip to Vietnam.
The province borders the Central Highlands, Kon Tum and Quang Ngai to the south, Laos to the west and Thua Thien Hue and Danang to the north. The South China Sea laps at Quang Nam's long coastline and several attractive beaches. Aside from the interesting Cham ruins at My Son, the interior of this province sees virtually no foreign tourism and Tam Ky, the provincial capital, sees even less.
