Quang Binh province
Quang Binh province marks the southern extremity of the North Central region of Vietnam. This region sees the fewest foreign visitors of any region of Vietnam -- of course many pass through, but precious few bother to get off the bus or train, instead coasting through enroute to Ninh Binh and Hanoi to the north and Hue and Da Nang to the south.
Most who do find themselves on the ground here are overlanders heading to one of the remoter border crossings with Laos, or they're budding speleologists, heading for Quang Binh's claim to fame the breathtakingly spectacular Phong Nha cave.
If you're one who considers caves to be nothing more than a hole in the ground, you have to see this cave to realise just how mistaken you are. There's caves, there's big caves and there's gigantic, world record-breaking caves like what you'll see in Phong Nha. If you've only got time for one cave in your holidays, this is it.
