Shadow puppet performance is an important ceremonial art form and is rarely undertaken in local villages due to the expense of hiring a dalang, the expert puppeteer.

However, this intriguing performance is possible to view three times per week at the Oka Kartini Bungalows on Jalan Raya Ubud, just to the east of town. Much of the performance is accompanied by an ancient form of language that visitors can't understand so notes are provided to ensure that everything makes sense.

It's a fascinating insight into the world of shadow puppetry and a worthwhile cultural experience to be a part of.

Performances are held on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, starting at 20:00 sharp, it's important to arrive early to secure the best of the seats.
