What we say: 3.5 stars

Surabaya Zoo, better known as Kebun Binatang Surabaya, is a popular Surabaya attraction but we do not recommend a visit.

Surabaya zoo is home to a diverse range of animals including many types of primates, deer and birds, but they are kept in dire conditions that don't seem to have improved much despite international coverage of shocking animal deaths.

A string of deaths have occurred in very recent years, including a giraffe (with nearly 20 kilograms of plastic in its digestive system), a Sumatran tiger, an African lion, a wallaby, a Komodo dragon, a babirusa cub, a Bawean deer, a crocodile and several birds.

While a new company was hired to manage the publicly-run facility, it seems a lack of finances have not really led to much improvement; while we used to think perhaps it was better to go to contribute funds to making the zoo better, it seems like this was too much to hope for.

If for some reason you do need to find the zoo, it's three kilometres south of the main train station. Any Bungurasih bound bus or angkot will stop here and cost 3,000 rupiah from the centre of town.
