Craft Complex (Kompleks Kraf Kuala Lumpur)

For the promotion of Malay handicrafts

Photo of , , Kuala Lumpur

What we say: 2.5 stars

The Craft Complex has a rather sad air about it, as befits any grandiose project that only attracts a trickle of visitors each day.

In this case, a massive site has been turned over to the production and promotion of Malaysian handicrafts (for which read "Malay").

As well as various shops and boutiques, the complex has a museum, a craft village where interactive demonstrations are held, and most interestingly, an artists' colony.

It's certainly not an unpleasant place to potter round for an hour or two -- for any more than that, you would have to be obsessed with handicrafts.

It can be reached easily on foot from KLCC or Bukit Bintang, and is best combined with a visit to the nearby Heritage Centre.

  • Disappointing...

    25th March, 2014

I knew not to have high hopes for this place, but I like arts and craftwork, so thought it'd be worth the 1.5km hike to get there.

Mostly, it just seems to be a big retail complex - a gift shop selling all sorts of souvenirs, albeit some nice quality ones like batik fabrics, ceramics, jewelry, etc. But I was more interested seeing the craft village - to see things being made. Aside form a few batik workers (who tried to sell me their batik paintings) and a wood carver (who ignored me) - there wasn't a lot else happening. What a pity - this place could potentially have a lot of potential.

If you're doing the hop on/hop off bus thing, it stops here - so by all means, stop in and have a look. (Tie it in with the Heritage House tours across the road at 11am and 3pm). But I don't think I'd recommend anyone hikes across the city to check it out.

The review above says you can potter around for an hour or two. I managed 45 minutes!
