Walking street: Waterloo Street
A pedestrian mall with temples
What we say:
Running through downtown Singapore, part of Waterloo Street was converted to a pedestrian mall after the crowds at two popular temples grew so big they caused traffic jams.
Now the devotees and incense sellers at the Chinese Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple and the Hindu Sri Krishnan Temple spill onto the road with no problems and the area has flourished with restaurants, shops and budget hotels.
The stretch of Waterloo Street before it becomes pedestrianised runs beside the Singapore Art Museum and is home to more religious buildings including Singapore's oldest synagogue.
