Chinatown Food Street

An eating street

What we say: 4 stars

After dark, Smith Street shifts from crowded with shoppers to crowded with diners as it becomes Chinatown Food Street.

This is one of the few places where you can sample Singapore street food actually on the street and the sounds, smells, and lights of Chinatown create a magical ambiance. The food's pretty good, too — try the grilled satay, barbequed seafood, and sinfully delicious char kway teow — a stir-fry of prawns, cockles, sausage, rice noodles, and lard.

Tiger beer with ice is the drink of choice and there's chendol — Singapore's take on a snowcone — for dessert.
