NEWater Visitor Centre
A uniquely Singaporean experience
What we say:
As a tiny island nation surrounded by sea water, one of Singapore's biggest challenges is providing fresh drinking water for its growing population of some six million people. Traditionally this has been achieved by importing water from Malaysia, but 30 years of water purification research have provided an alternative. As the most high-tech water treatment facility in the world, the NEWater plant turns sewage into drinking water.
A tour of the facility lasts 45 minutes and shows visitors first-hand how water that's flushed down toilets and sinks is filtered, purified and pumped back into the taps. The tour includes a video presentation and interesting bits of info -- did you know that 30% of Singapore's current water needs are met by NEWater?
The tour culminates with a NEWater taste test and participants can take home as many bottles of NEWater as their hearts desire. The plant offers five free tours per day at 09:00, 10:45, 12:30, 14:15 and 16:00. Advanced registration through the NEWater website is recommended.
