Geylang Serai Market
Memories of the kampong days
What we say:
It wasn't long ago that all Singaporeans did their daily shopping in markets exactly like this.
The Geylang Serai market is located in a very Malay neighbourhood and it shows in every aspect, from the market's architecture to the goods for sale — Halal meats, sun-dried fish, fragrant spices, colourful songket fabrics and a hawker centre specialising in Malaysian food. Recent renovations have left the market squeaky clean but no less traditional. Geylang Serai is the centre of activities during the Hari Raya Puasa festival with a holiday bazaar, decorations and all-night feasting. The Malay Cultural Village is next door.
