Orchard Road Christmas Light Up
Bright not white Christmas
What we say:
While there won't be snow glistening or sleigh bells ringing in sunny Singapore during Christmas, on the main shopping street of Orchard Road, retailers do their best to create an enchanting winter wonderland. This year, walk down two-kilometre long Orchard Road from Tanglin Mall to Orchard Central and take in the elegant show, “Christmas on a Great Street”, in hues of blue and white.
The Orchard Road Business Association, in a bid to encourage mall owners to get festive, organises a best-dressed building contest every year; now there’s even a new @Orchard mobile app to download so you can vote for your favourite — though it may be a tough choice.
Ion Orchard looks glitzy with its thousands of tiny lights on regular days, but screams colour and decadence at the moment. You might not be able to afford Dior and Cartier, but you can well afford to chill out on the benches set among the bright pillars, maze and “garden” with reindeer outside.
Many malls have put up extravagant Christmas trees, for if there’s one way to compete, height is a straightforward way to do it. High-ceilinged malls like Takashimaya will feature at least one towering indoor tree; others like Paragon feature a Christmas tree outside.
Orchard Central has created a wonderful “Christmas Town Square” with a bakery and candy store displaying treats that almost real (if they aren’t!); walk through the exhibits and drool.
If you prefer to sit and watch instead, while there aren’t that many cafes on Orchard right on the main road, you could pull up a chair at the Connoisseur Concerto (TCC) and Outdoors cafes near Peranakan Place. The hotels with the best view right on Orchard Road are of course the top tier ones, like the Marriott and Hyatt, but if you just want accommodation near enough to Orchard, these will do as well.
And if you’re just too overwhelmed by the frenzy of Orchard Road shoppers hunting down gifts in the lead up to December 25, don’t panic — the light-up continues till January 5, 2014.
