Mon Thaa Than Falls Nature Trail

The perfect hike and swim excursion

What we say: 3.5 stars

This hike through some of the area's pristine natural environment begins near the national park headquarters on Doi Suthep (it's a right just after Wat Doi Suthep).

Among the highlights are a huge strangler fig tree, abundant wild flowers including the rare red and yellow speckled sapria, some great bird watching and other wildlife, and finally Mon Thaa Than Falls, which are lovely and suitable for swimming.

To reach the trail from park headquarters, walk past the park chalets on the right and take the small path at the side of the last chalet. This path winds around the rim of a small valley for about a km before emerging onto a wider dirt track. Take a right here and walk another 200 metres, after which you'll see a small sign on the right to the waterfall. Two km later you'll be at the top of Mon Thaa Than Falls. After you're sufficiently refreshed, cross the stream at the foot of the falls and follow the track to the car park.

The trail can be slippery and overgrown in places, especially during rainy season, so do use caution.

More details
How to get there: The easiest way to get here is to hire a songthaew (600 baht for a return trip), asking to be dropped at the Doi Suthep National Park headquarters and picked up at Mon Thaa Than Falls parking lot. If your ride isn't waiting at the parking lot (or you just took a one-way trip), you can walk two kilometres on the sealed road from the falls' parking lot and thumb a ride from a passing songthaew on the main road.
