Let's go find Nemo!

What we say: 3.5 stars

Stroller friendly, air-conditioned and rarely crowded, the modest Phuket Aquarium is a part of the government-run Phuket Marine Biological Centre on picturesque Cape Panwa.

While not exactly up to world-class standards, the aquarium makes for a relaxing half-day jaunt — especially if you have kids in tow or are seeking a rainy day activity.

Attractions include more than 150 species of aquatic life mainly from the Andaman Sea, a 2004 tsunami exhibit and a submerged "walk-through" tunnel where you'll be surrounded by reef sharks and giant grouper fish. Try to make it on Saturday or Sunday when the rays and larger fish are fed at 11:00.

The aquarium could be part of a full-day tour of Cape Panwa, which makes up for its lack of star attractions with scenic drives, quiet beaches, lookout points and a seaside promenade that's perfect for a romantic evening stroll. The area is best accessed by car or motorbike thanks to the scenic drives, but there's also a songthaew route from Phuket town that lets off at the aquarium. The ride there from the departure point on Ranong Road takes 30-40 minutes.
