Surfing at Kata

A few breaks to choose from

What we say:

For surfers, Kata Noi gets a fast right hander that comes in near the northern headland of the beach, while bigger Kata Yai gets what many regard as the best waves on Phuket.

The later is a beach break, crowded at times but certainly surfable. The Phuket Surfing Contest takes place here every year in late August, early September.

There is a pretty small surfing community based at the southern end of Kata Yai, with board rental available for about 200B an hour. Two shops in between Kata BBQ and Ska Bar have lots of information on good surf spots, wave conditions and can provide surf lessons. If you are feeling brave and don't mind sharing the waves with hundreds of swimmers, rent a board from one of the beach boys on Kata Yai.

With far more freedom to paddle but often dangerous conditions, boards are also for rent at Kata Noi for 150-200B.
