What we say: 4 stars

When comparing dive shops, it's a good idea to focus on factors other than price: equipment maintenance and ethics should be considerations, too. The following operations all have good reputations and offer a range of certification courses: :

Forra Diving
http://www.forradiving.com
T: (0840) 545 5012; (084) 407 5691
With headquarters on Sunrise beach, Forra Diving also has locations on Pattaya beach and Walking Street, and they have a friendly coterie of multilingual, experienced instructors. They offer live-aboard diving trips on their 27-metre yacht for two to six days. The boat runs from Lipe all the way up to Phuket, stopping at the best dive spots along the way, so this is a great way for divers to make the trip north if heading that way. Forra also offers daytrips, night diving and snorkellers are welcome to tag along for 500 baht (including lunch and equipment). Ask for Antoine or Valerie; they've been on Lipe for years. Forra Diving is open from the beginning of November until May 15, and consistently gets great reviews from divers. They also operate funky resorts on Sunrise and Pattaya beaches, which generally take reservations from divers only.

Their diving rates aren't the cheapest on the island, but their expertise and quality get them high marks from divers. They offer all-inclusive two- or three-day packages, plus specialty PADI courses and underwater photography. Barry has been on Ko Lipe for a decade, and is a fantastic resource for all things Lipe. The original Sabye Diving shop is on Sunset beach and a new location has opened at the Bundhaya Resort on Pattaya beach.

Divers head out by longtail and enjoy lunch at one of the area's deserted and pristine tiny islands.
