Ko Pha Ngan is so big, we’ve split it up into areas, select one of the below for detailed accommodation and food listings in that area. Sights and general overviews for Ko Pha Ngan as a whole can be found via the icons above. Don’t know where to start? Read an overview of Ko Pha Ngan’s different areas.
Ko Pha Ngan may well be best known for its parties — the Full Moon, Half Moon, Black Moon and Shiva Moon, just for starters — but fun, sporty activities are also available for those not so keen on glow paint and Sangsom buckets. Here are a few.
Ko Pha Ngan has a very active football (or soccer, whatever you want to call it) community, with teams representing various parts of the island and regularly-scheduled tournaments. FC Farang is the name of the team mostly made up of expats who live on the island (“farang” means “foreigner” in Thai), and travellers are welcome to come and join in on a game. There’s a 50 baht charge for playing, which every member (even the long termers) must pay at each game or practice session, which goes towards funding team jerseys, equipment and so on. The team usually plays at the football field in Maduwan, near the main police station, Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, starting at 17:00.
Ko Pha Ngan offers numerous options when it comes to volleyball. A popular venue is near Tommy Resort on Haad Rin Nok beach, starting four days before the Full Moon Party. It’s a two-on-two competition that follows international beach volleyball rules, and there’s big prize money for the winners. The final games take place in the evenings, under floodlighting. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for details or buzz (087) 010 7692. Of course, it’s possible to find volleyball courts set up by resorts on most beaches. Malibu Beach Resort has a great beach volleyball venue, and there are often groups playing there on Saturday afternoons.
Everyone loves a good pub game — whether it’s a pub quiz, a game of pool, or something else entirely, these are a great way to help everyone get into the party mood. One of the best places for pub games on Ko Pha Ngan is Same Same Bar, in Haad Rin. Some of their popular game nights include beer pong competitions, body painting contests, quiz nights and drinking games.
There is also a Haad Rin pub crawl, which takes place Mondays and Thursdays every week. Participants meet at Planet Hollyfood in Haad Rin, and pay 200 baht to get them discounts on drinks, a free bucket, a free T-shirt, and more.
And don’t forget there’s Lake Hut, where the Wipeout course will also give you a good work out.
