(Stand Up Paddling) at Naish SUP

Paddling on a surf board

What we say: 3.5 stars

The newest craze to hit Ko Samui's beaches is SUP, or stand-up-paddling, an easy-to-learn sport that entails standing on long surf boards while paddling across the water.

It's easy to learn, and those with a little experience can try their paddle at smaller and faster boards. Some boards even have clip-in sail attachments for a seamless transition to windsurfing. Naish SUP at the end of Chaweng Beach offers a free beginner SUP lesson, but it will cost you 300 baht for an intensive hour lesson.

Once you get the hang of it, a paddle out to the tiny islet of Ko Matlang makes for a fun afternoon -- you could even bring a picnic basket on board! Naish rents out SUP boards for 200 baht per hour, 500 baht per half-day, 800 baht per full-day, or 4,500 per week. They also offer surfing lessons although Samui's surf is generally on the meagre side unless a big monsoon recently came through.
